Alan Bates

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, Mr. Alan C. Bates passed away Monday, October 27, 2014 at his residence with his family by his side. Age 71 years. He was born January 6, 1943 in Fairfield, Alabama to Coleman Sr. and Gwendolyn Bates.
Alan relocated with his parents to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of one year old. In his later years he moved to Saginaw, Michigan where he was employed with General Motors Saginaw Grey Iron Foundry. He was also a member of UAW Local 668. Alan retired in 2005 after 35 years of faithful service, He loved watching TV, reading the newspaper, talking and telling jokes. Alan was the Pittsburgh Steelers number one fan. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves to celebrate his legacy his devoted wife and caregiver of 30 years, Barbara (Boles) Bates; four daughters, Michelle Dupars of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marla Bates (Tyrone Lawson), Brandi (Royce) Johnson and Devia Boles all of Saginaw, Michigan; three sons, Alan Bates Jr., Dedrick and Derrick Boles all of Saginaw, Michigan; thirteen grandchildren, Terell Bates, Alexis Jackson, Brooklyn Lawson, Royce Johnson Jr., Brittany and Monique Boles, Savannah Price, Latreze Mushatt, MyKail Williams, Channon and CeCe Minor, Jaynay and Shoneka Barnett; four great-grandchildren, BreAsia Aguilar, Preston Minor, Nasar Jimenez, JorEynn Bates; mother, Gwendolyn Bates; one sister, Janice Bates-Matuscak of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; one brother, Coleman (Evelyn) Bates Jr.; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hughes of Saginaw, Michigan and Diane Boles of Columbus, Ohio; five brothers-in-law, Horace Washington of Saginaw, Michigan, Steven (Rolene) Boles of Atlanta, Georgia, Cornelius Berry, Anthony and Robert Boles all of Michigan; many other relatives and friends including his special friend, Ephersin Weary Jr.
Alan was preceded in death by his father, Coleman Bates Sr., mother-in-law, Sarah Berry, father and mother-in-law, Robert and Juanita Boles.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of Wellspring Hospice and to all the family and friends who offered condolences, prayers and encouraging words.
