Alonzo Jones (Oklahoma City/Lansing)

June 27, 1943 — July 18, 2021

Mr. Alonzo Jones Alonzo was called home on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at the age of 78 years. He was born in Sweet Home, Arkansas on June 27, 1943, to George W. Jones and Hazel Martin Collins.

Alonzo grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and graduated from J. W. Sexton High School in 1961. He immediately joined the United States Navy where his last service was on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt. After his Naval Service, he did what most willing Michiganders did, he began work at General Motors Corporation in 1964. During this time, he continued his training attending Lansing Community College and attending GM Apprenticeship School from 1969 – 1973. He then became a Skilled Trades-Pipe Fitter.

In 1966, he married his wife, Sandra and to this union their only child, Joy was born. In 1979, the family relocated to Oklahoma City. He joined multiple organizations and continued to work at GM until his retirement in 1998.

Alonzo was a relentless community activist involved in the UAW Civil Rights Committee, the Community Action Program supported the Executive Board and various other committees. He was an Executive Board member of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, NAACP - Oklahoma City branch. He was also a proud member of several Masonic organizations. Alonzo was a proud Prince Hall Mason who served faithfully as a Past Master in King David Lodge # 50, a 33° Mason in Greatwestern Consistory # 34, a Noble and Past Potentate in Alaraf Temple # 20, a Companion in Cody H. Rhymes Chapter # 21, Holy Royal Arch Masons, a Royal and Select Master in Sandy Smiley Jr. Council # 14, a Sir Knight in Midwest Commandery # 4, Knights Templar Masons and a Past Patron in Levi G. Smith # 100, Order of the Eastern Star.

Alonzo leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Sandra Y. Jones; daughter, Joy L. Jones of Houston, Texas; sister, Katherine Leeks of Lansing, Michigan; brother, Bobby Glenn Henderson of College Station, Arkansas; grandson, Sean Hayden of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews as well as a multitude of loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, George W. Jones; mother, Hazel Collins; sister, Jeanie Beasley, and brother, Edgar L. Collins.

In lieu of flowers, it was Alonzo’s request to please consider donating to the King David Lodge #50 Scholarship Fund in the name of Alonzo Jones. All funds will be earmarked for skilled trade certifications and training scholarships.
