Amena Amal Sabri (Midland)

January 1, 1935 — June 4, 2024

Loving mother, sister, and wife, Amal Sabri, passed away at home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan after a long battle with an illness.


Amal was born in Damascus, Syria to Dr. Zafer Sabri and Nemat Ismat. She married the love of her life Dr. Nazem Haidar in 1967 with whom she had three children Salma Haidar (Rami Safadi), Samer Haidar (Alia Alsarraj), and Imad Haidar. She had 5 grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart: Jad, Yasmine, and Danny Safadi, as well as Lulia and Judy Haidar. She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Zafer Sabri and Nemat Ismat, husband Dr. Nazem Haidar, and brother Sameer Sabri. She is survived by sister Issam, her brother Nabil, along with many friends, and extended family.


A dedicated educator, Amal graduated from Damascus University with a degree in English Literature and Education. Throughout her career, she imparted knowledge and wisdom to countless students, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

Amal's generous spirit extended beyond her family and into her community. Whether it was lending a helping hand to her students or caring for her aging parents, husband, aunts, uncles, or even distant relatives, she embodied the true essence of compassion and selflessness.


A culinary expert and gracious host, Amal loved preparing delicious meals and creating beautiful table settings for gatherings with family and friends. Her artistic talents knew no bounds, as she excelled in various crafts including knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, and embroidery.


The family will have a private ceremony for Al-Janaza Prayer at the Islamic Center of East Lansing and burial at the Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing. A memorial ceremony will take place in her hometown of Damascus, Syria on June 8th, 2024.
