Precious Memories of Anna M. Wade-Flournoy
Written by Anna
On July 18, 1942 in Humboldt, Tennessee, a baby girl was born to Odell and Flora Wade. She was the 10th of 12 children born to this union.
Anna M. Wade-Flournoy, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, surrendered her earthly home to secure her seat in the Kingdom on Friday, May 27, 2022.
She began her Christian journey at Williams Chapel Missionary Baptist church where she was baptized at a very early age. Anna sang in the Youth Choir and would often sing solos at various churches in the city of Humboldt. She had such a melodious voice, and singing was her passion.
Anna graduated from Stigall with honor in 1961; ranking 6th in the top 10 of her senior class. After graduating. She was hired as a substitute teacher at Stigall.
In 1964, Anna broke the color barrier by becoming the first African American hired at Wayne Knitting Mill; employed as a Hosiery Inspector.
Anna gave up her job in 1965 and married the love of her life, Major F. Flournoy, in Jackson, Tennessee. They moved to Saginaw, Michigan to begin a new life together. They gave birth to two children: Anthony E. Flournoy and Carletha L. Flournoy.
They became members of Prince of Peace Baptist Church pastored by the late Reverend. K.M. Merkerson. Later they united with Truevine Baptist pastored by the late Reverend R.B. Corley, Sr. Anna served on the Nurse’s Guild during this time. She still remained a remember of Truevine under the leadership of Reverend. Paul E. Broaddus.
Anna’s employment began in Saginaw at the Saginaw Furniture Shop as a hand and machine sander of furniture.
In 1974, she was hired by the Saginaw Public School System in the Adult Basic Education Program. She assisted students with GED Prep. in order for them to take the GED test. Anna worked in the English as a Second Language Class helping non-English-speaking students learn basic skills.
Anna received several awards and certificates such as: The MAPACE (Michigan Association of Public Adult continuing Education) for her outstanding performance and services in the program, Bilingual Aide for recognition of her efforts to reduce adult illiteracy in the Saginaw City and County and a Laubach Literacy Action Tutor Certificate.
For a few years she worked at Longfellow, Webber and Edith Bailey Elementary Schools. However, her main focus was with the Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language Programs.
In 1992, Anna enrolled at Delta College and earned a GPA of 3.8 while working full-time and still spending quality time with her husband and her children. In May 1995 she was awarded the Delta College Student Support Service Award for excellence in academics.
Anna spent 20 years in the Adult Basic Education Program helping to wipe out illiteracy. She took pride in her job and would get so excited when students progressed from one level to the next.
Anna enjoyed reading the Bible, Daily Word, and In Touch magazines. In her spare time she did crossword/wordsearch, sewing, macramé and growing plants. She definitely had a green thumb when it came to plants, and had quite a selection of house plants.
She was a big supporter of the City of Saginaw Rescue Mission, Boys Town and St. Jude Children’s Hospital Research.
Anna leaves to cherish her “Precious Memories” one son, Anthony E. Flournoy, her daughter, Carletha L. Flournoy, and granddaughter, Talaya Nichol Martin. She would like to give special recognition to a faithful few who made her feel truly loved and special. However, space will not allow highlighting what each one did specifically. Anna commends her daughter, Carletha L. Flournoy, for taking her into her home when the doctor decided that she could no longer live alone. Carletha rearranged her lifestyle to make sure she got the best care possible: the best medical care, taking her to and from her appointments and whatever was necessary to accommodate her.
