Annoise Lorraine Bates passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the age of 90 years at Covenant Healthcare-Harrison in Saginaw, Michigan after a six-month ordeal. Lorraine was born on May 17, 1923 in Quantico, Virginia to Robert Lee Bates and Ovella H. Miller Bates.
James Nips Bates and Lorraine married on July 31, 1940 in Manassas, Virginia. Lorraine was a devoted wife of 67 years. James preceded her to Glory in February of 2008. She was his Sweet Lorraine. In 1942, the family relocated to Saginaw, Michigan. Lorraine loved to read novels and do jigsaw puzzles. In her later years she kept her mind sharp with word games and crossword puzzles. Lorraine had many skills: sewing, upholstering and canning food. She was a strong, loving, supportive woman to her husband and her 11 children, their children and their childrens children.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory two sons, Jeffrey L. Bates and John E. Bates; seven daughters, Joyce Williams, Jacqueline (Thomas) Triplett, Jeraldine Burnell, Julia (Tonza) Price, Jocelyn Jackson, Jeanetta Bates and Jennifer Bates; son-in-law, Willie Wright Sr.; 20 grandchildren, Regina Wright Ryan, Willie (Linda) Wright Jr., Cynthia Wright, Tangya Moore, Winfred Morgan Jr., Corey (Tiombe) Morgan Sr., Rachel Burnell, Rochelle (Damon) Grant Sr., Herschel Burnell III, Jenise Bates, Jamarr Bates, Jana Chambers-Bates, Charles Bates, Justin Burnell, Shontell Tillman, Torrance Burnell, Bria Burnell, Tonza Price II, Jonathan Price and Jamia Bates; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Betty McCurdy of Saginaw and Dorothy Thomas of Virginia; a special niece, Janet McCurdy Miller; two special nephews, Robert E. Bates of Florida and Ronald Sykes of Virginia; two brothers-in-law, Walter Bates of Ohio and Lawrence Davis of Pennsylvania; three sisters-in law, Marcine Ramsey, Fannie Bates and Luretta Bates, all of Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Reverend Frederick S. Jones of Virginia; many other relatives and friends.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, James Bates; her parents, Robert and Ovella Bates; one son, James M. Bates Jr.; one daughter, Joan O. Bates Wright; three infant grandchildren; one son-in-law, Donald L. Williams; one daughter-in-law, Martha Clark Bates; brother, Robert E. Bates; sister, Mary C. Jones; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James Andrew Bates and Fannie Javins Cole Bates; stepmother-in-law Catherine Davis Bates; 10 sisters-in-law and 13 brothers-in-law.
The family wishes to express special thanks to everyone who offered kind words, condolences and prayers expressed to our family during this time of bereavement.
