Artie Mae Washington passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at Healthsource Saginaw. Age 87 years. She was born May 25, 1926 in Montgomery, Alabama to Will and Jimmy Mae Hendricks.
Artie married the late George Washington in May 1944. She was employed at Saginaw Valley State University where she was the head cook for many, many years. Artie was awarded the Silver Platter in catering. She was affectionately known as mother. Artie was a member of New Faith Temple under the leadership of Pastor Charles H. Coleman. She loved to cook, enjoyed embroidery and traveling. Artie loved her family and entertaining. Above all, she truly loved the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Jacqueline Washington, Loretta (Jeff) Buchanan, Leechburg, Pennsylvania; three sons, Eldred (Lois) Washington, Donald (Sherleen) Washington, Kirkland (Betty) Washington; grandchildren, Jorge, Dominic, William, Laurance, Zella, Della, Floyd, Donald Jr., Miccii, Cyrus, Sheena, LaDosha, LuCretia, Kendrick, Kirk Jr., Passion, Eldred Jr., Dominique, Ryen and Denzel; thirty great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret McClain; one brother, David (Ida) Cook, Detroit, Michigan; a special daughter-in-law, Angie Payne; many other relatives and friends including her special friends, Lela Williams, Annie (Sunny) Haynes, Lorraine Conley and Willie Neal.
Artie was preceded in death by her husband, George Washington, one daughter, Gwendolin Huell, one son, William Payne, three grandsons, Joseph Huell Jr., Devon Jumper and Jerry Hamilton, three sisters, Rebecca Harper, Tessie Johnson and Mattie Pierson.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Brooks, the staff of Covenant Healthcare and our dear neighbors, the Griffith Family of South 12th Street.
