Betty Jewel Oliver was born in Kennett, Missouri on May 15, 1952, to the parents of John Oliver and Bessie Mae Oliver. She was the seventh daughter of twelve girls. She departed this life on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at her residence.
In the first half of 1965, she relocated to the state of Michigan alongside her sister, Johnnie Oliver. Later, in the same year, she went back to Missouri to persuade her parents to move to Michigan. Her whole family packed up and moved without reservation. Betty attended Christ Temple Church with her family under the leadership of Elder William H. Warren. She was baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance at a young age. She attended Lansing School District and furthered her education by obtaining a degree in cosmetology. She was an entrepreneur to her heart, and it propelled her to start her very own cleaning service. She was O.C.D. Years later, she restored her love for cosmetology by restoring wigs. She named her new business Wearing Instant Glamour (WIG). She was blessed with four children from two marriages and had a deep love for her family, including her grand pup Preacher and nephew pup Charley. Betty was known for her strong, outspoken personality and was never one to hold back. Although she was short in stature, she was sassy, and she always said what she meant and meant what she said. Her love for her family was unparalleled, and she enjoyed reading the Bible, repairing wigs, and doing crossword, word searches, and jigsaw puzzles. She was real and one of a kind.
She leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Niconna (Nelson) Nicholson of Lansing, MI and KinShassa (Willie) Henderson of Newbern, TN; son, Michael (Rachel) Thompson of Lansing, MI; granddaughters, Brittney Thompson, Kionna Thompson, Nabria Nicholson, Jada Patterson, Kai’Rynn Johnson, and Kendall Johnson, all of Lansing, MI, E’Maunii Henderson and E’Madje-na Henderson, both of Newbern, TN; grandsons, Marquis Thompson, Marshon Houston, Michael Thompson, Jr., Jayvion Patterson, and Davon Patterson all of Lansing, MI; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Croom and Athena Thompson, both of Lansing, MI; sisters, Johnnie Mae Lewis, Barbara Oliver, Patricia Oliver, Deborah Oliver, all of Lansing, MI, (Authur) Mary Bullocks, and Charlotte Roper, both of Benton Harbor, MI; brother in law, Theodore Warren; Godchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy C. Hill; parents, John and Bessie Mae Oliver; sisters, Carolyn Oliver, Annie Mae Oliver, Florine Fletcher, Estelle Warren, and Ruby Barnett; nephews, Charles Johnson, Daryl Oliver, and Cord’e Lewis; niece, Melissa Fletcher.
