Mr. Carl Anthony Quinn "Bird" passed away Saturday, November 30, 2024, in Lansing, Michigan. Age 61 years. He was born Wednesday, August 21, 1963, in Centerville, Illinois, the son of Thomas Quinn and Flora Jean Quinn.
Carl graduated from Hill Vocational Center, where he began to develop a strong work ethic and a love for people. His first job as a cook at Ida’s Southside Carryout sparked a lifelong passion for cooking, which he continued to share with friends and family. His ability to make others feel welcome through his cooking was a gift that will always be remembered. Later, he worked as a maintenance technician at Avancez Industries, where he became known for his dedication and hard work, building lasting relationships with his coworkers.
In 1993, Carl became a father with the birth of his first daughter, Camia Shaniece Jones-Quinn, followed by his second daughter, Carla Denise Jeannette Jones-Quinn, in 1995, and his third daughter, Layonna Barnes, in 2008. He was married to the love of his life, Deborah Ann Risper, in 1996 and they remained friends. Carl’s love for his daughters and grandchildren was immeasurable, and his role as a father and grandfather brought him great joy.
As a young boy, Carl developed a passion for talking on the CB radio, where he earned the handle “Lil Suga Daddy.” He formed lifelong friendships through this hobby, most notably with his childhood friend Kirk Pruitt. Over the years, Carl continued to meet people, forging close relationships and always leaving a positive impact on those around him.
Carl’s love of music was another defining part of his life. Whether it was the blues, R&B, or old-school rap, Carl was often found enjoying his favorite tunes. His infectious laughter and good sense of humor were always at the heart of any gathering. His spirit and zest for life were contagious, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Camia Shaniece Jones-Quinn of Lansing, Michigan and Layonna Barnes of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren, Leiuanna Curtis, Maliyah Curtis, and Samirah Alkalach; father, Thomas Quinn; sister, Lisa (Darryl Grant) Quinn-Grant, PhD of Country Club Hills, Illinois; brother, Thomas Lavon Quinn; many nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends including special cousin, sister, twin—Sonya R. (Kaufman) Moore; friends, Kirk Pruitt, Julian (Benny) Houston, and Marcus DeMeyers. Deborah Ann Risper (Darrell Whisper, Ebony Ketchum, and Sean Ketchum) of Lansing, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carla Denise Jeanette Jones-Quinn; mother, Flora Jean Quinn; paternal grandparents, Carl Quinn and Rosie Brown; maternal grandparents, Burdette Kaufman and Florine Kaufman; sister, Rosalind Renee Griffin; and brother, Bizer Quinn.
