Mrs. Carrie Hicks departed this earthly life on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at her residence in Lansing, Michigan. Age 100 years old. She was born on Saturday, August 30, 1924, in Kosciusko, Mississippi and lived a life marked by resilience, dedication, and service to her community. Mrs. Hicks was raised by her grandmother after the early loss of her parents, a challenge she met with strength and grace, setting the foundation for a lifetime of resilience and compassion.
Mrs. Hicks was a beacon of love and support for her expansive family, including her 12 children, dozens of grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, nurturing them with care and profound moral guidance.
She was also known to many as “Mother Hicks,” because of her dedication of more than 60 years to New Hope Church of God in Christ, serving as a pianist, songstress, missionary on the Mothers Board, and member of the Angel Choir, through which she enriched her community with her musical talents and unwavering faith.
However, while practicing unfeigned faith she also honed carpentry skills to contribute to home remodeling. She demonstrated resourcefulness by adding plumbing techniques to her extensive repertoire. “Old Lady Hicks” was known for using remarkable ingenuity to make miracles, signs, and wonders happen not only in the area of home remodeling, but overall improvements to the lives of those around her eve more.
Her unwavering dedication to providing aid and welfare for children and the elderly highlighted her compassionate nature and her commitment to uplifting others, thereby enhancing the lives of those throughout and beyond her community.
She leaves to cherish her memories, sons, Bruce (Lela) Hicks, Robert Lee Hicks, and Bob (Linda) Dodd; daughters, Donna (Terry) Wray, Beverly Hicks, and Alice Glover; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hicks, Jr.; sons, Frederick Hicks and Jeffery (Dorothy) Hicks; daughters, Katie Roberts, Deloris White, Tennie Collie, and Vivian (OC) Bowers; parents, Leora Coleman and Jonnie Griffin; and son-in-law, Haywood Glover.
