Catherine Walker

September 8, 1934 — November 16, 2020

Mother Catherine Snell Walker moved from labor to reward and gained eternal rest on the morning of Monday, November 16, 2020, at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. She was born one of five daughters, on September 8, 1934, in Ozark, Alabama to Deacon Grady and Myra Griffin Snell.

Mother Walker attended Dale County Public Schools. She accepted Christ at an early age at Old Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Catherine married Joyce “Shane” Walker and with their two children, moved to Saginaw in the 1950s. Catherine was a retiree of Saginaw General Hospital where she was voted “Miss Congeniality” by her peers. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where she served as President of the Mother’s Board, Co-Chair of the Mother’s Board Annual Green Tea, and past President of the Mission.

Mother Walker was a devout Christian and you could often find her studying the Bible, preparing for Sunday School, or watching the Gospel channel. She was affectionately called Granny by those who knew her and will be remembered for her kindness, words of encouragement, her smile and her beautiful eyes.

Mother Walker was preceded in death by her husband, Joyce “Shane” Walker; daughter, Patricia Walker; son, Jimmie Walker, Sr.; sisters, Annie Mertha (James T.) Nickerson, Lillie Maurine (Cullen) Redding, Myra Jean and Pattie Sue Snell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas, Boyd Allen, Henry, Charles, and Jeanette Walker.

She leaves to cherish her memory granddaughters, Kanah "Shell" (Pastor Miles) Franklin and their children Torrion, Terrell and Whitney (Quenton), Saginaw, Michigan, Shanieka "Nikki" Walker and her children Madison and Derrick, Fort Mitchell, Alabama; one grandson, Jimmie "Jay" Walker, Jr. and his son Jimmie Walker III, Peoria, Illinois; one bonus granddaughter, Jimeka McKandes, Peoria, Illinois; sister-in-law, Annie Locke; long-time friend, Marie Matthews; many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, other loved ones and friends, including the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Family.
