Chermese Johnson-Gibbs

August 5, 1979 — April 18, 2024

Mrs. Chermese Jamaal Gibbs “Mikki” passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the age of 44 years. Chermese had a beautiful and loving spirit and leaves behind memories of warmth, laughter, and a legacy of love. Mikki was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Aug. 5, 1979, to Johnny Martin Sr. and Felecia Karen Johnson Martin.


Chermese attended Saginaw Public Schools and graduated from Saginaw High School (Go Trojans!). In 1997, while attending Saginaw High School, she was the MVP of her softball team her senior year. In her adult years, she enjoyed watching her oldest son play various school sports. After high school, she joined the U.S. Army and later the National Guard.


Mikki loved the Lord and was baptized at an early age at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Saginaw, Michigan. She attended Davenport University and Delta College. Mikki held several leadership and managerial positions throughout her employment in Saginaw County. She was an excellent mother of three sons whom she loved and adored. She loved to cook (especially BBQ and smoke special cuts of meat) and was famous for her tamales. Mikki made sure everyone got a chance to sample her skills. Other than cooking, she loved to fish, crochet, watch the Detroit Lions (Go Lions!), listen to music, braid, style hair, and do nails. Mikki was also a loyal customer and supporter of small businesses and entrepreneurs.


Mikki is survived by her husband, DeAndra Gibbs; children, Xavier Smith “Bubba,” D’Torrion Gibbs “Heavy,” and Harlem Gibbs “Booger;’ father, Johnny Martin Sr.; mother-in-law, Beverly Rose Gibbs; stepchildren, DeAndre and Niasah Gibbs; sisters, Nia Martin (who was more like a daughter) of Saginaw, Michigan, and Astin Martin of Oak Point, Texas; brothers, Robert “Bob” Johnson of Saginaw, Dominic (Mecha) Johnson of Carrolton, Georgia, and Johnny Martin Jr. of Saginaw; nephews, Desmond (Kennedy) Hubbert of Saginaw, Cai’Dric, Carmine and Cy’Erre Bell, of Texas, Da’Perrius, Dominic Johnson, Jr. and D’Prre Johnson of Georgia; nieces, Shoniesha Harris and Destiny Johnson of Saginaw, and Da’Perria Johnson of Georgia; special cousins, Janei Greer of Saginaw, Lashawn Johnson of Fort Wayne, Indiana and J.W. Martin of Saginaw; special friends, Leshonda Wilson and Rosemary Dugan of Saginaw, Tongela Curry of Little Rock Arkansas, and Kamilah McGowan of Fairburn, Georgia; Mikki is also survived by a host of friends and family whom she loved dearly.


Mikki was predeceased by her mother, Felecia Karen Johnson Martin; grandparents, Gladys and Leoda Johnson, and Mose and Irene Martin; and cousin, Aaron Johnson.
