Clarence Edward Hassel passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and caregivers from this life the evening of Sunday, July 23rd, 2023, in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 67 years old. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on Wednesday, September 7th, 1955, the son of Shirley R. Hassel and Tyree Owens.
Clarence was a student in the Lansing School District and was a proud graduate of the Harry Hill High School Class of 1973. He joined the United States Army and received his Honorable Discharge. From the beginning, he was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and brave. Clarence was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all his life experiences: living abroad, sporting endeavors, military & career assignments, and his love for knowledge through research. In his spare time, he enjoyed building systems around numerical data and nurturing his skills as a self-taught horticulturist. Clarence loved spending time with his family.
Clarence is survived by four children, Tyree (Heather) Daniel, Travis Young, Clarence (Tashila) Hassel Jr., and Patrick (Rakia) Hassell; eleven grandchildren, Marian (Jeffrey) Anderson, Ethan, Evan, and Ean Daniel, Elianna Soto-Young and Travis Young Jr., Clarence “Trey” Hassel III, Devonte, Haleigh, Patrick ‘JP’, and Hazel Hassell; five sibling, Viola King, Leatrice Henry, Titus Henry, Zenus Owens, and Tony Gilmore; twelve cousins, Sonya Ford-Anthony, Ronnie Ford, Donald McCovey, Willie (Cathy) Morgan, Sandra Morgan, John Morgan, Deborah Morgan-Kirby, Elaine (John) Morgan-Crawford, Darin (Connie) Dismuke, Darrell Dismuke Sr., Pamela Dismuke, Denell Dismuke, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Broadnax; stepfather, Jonathon (Joe) Brown and father, Tyree Owens; sister, Latonya Owens; aunt, Elizabeth Morgan; cousins, Karen Baseemah Hassel-Peoples, Terry Morgan, and Keith Morgan, other relatives, and friends.
