Clemson Calhoun, Jr. (Lansing)

July 27, 1933 — January 6, 2024

Mr. Clemson Calhoun, Jr. stood on the Banks of Jordon and met his Savior on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 5:10 p.m., at Sparrow Health System in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 90 years old. He was born Thursday, July 27, 1933, in Alpine, Alabama to the union of Clemson, Sr. and Ruby Jones-Calhoun. Clemson was born on his mother's 19th birthday.


Clemson left Alpine, Alabama at an early age and moved to Rockford, Illinois. There he met his late wife Delores Elizabeth White-Calhoun. To this union two sons were born Arthur and Victor Calhoun. Clemson moved to Lansing, Michigan later in life where he gained employment at General Motors Corporation-Oldsmobile Division retiring in 1989 and opened several restaurants. Later in life, Clemson was employed at CASE Credit Union for 13 years.


He gave his life to God under the leadership of Pastor J. E. Graves at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a Deacon. Clemson also was under the leadership of Reverend H. Levi McClendon III at Mt. Zion All Nations Bible Church, still serving as a Deacon. He would eventually move his church membership to Prince of Peace Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Carroll Carter. Clemson was well accepted by the church and the Lansing communities. Clemson was a true Soldier in the Army of the Lord!! He was kind and giving. He was not judgmental. He was Deacon Clemson Calhoun, and he truly loved the Lord. Clemson met the love of his life approximately 43 years ago, his wife Barbara. They were together till death do us part.


Clemson will sadly be missed by his loving wife, Barbara Calhoun; sons, Arthur (Toni) Calhoun of Antioch, Tennessee and RayRay Calhoun of Pinola, Mississippi; daughter, Sherry (Lloyd) Bearden of La Habra, California; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Surena (Allen) Strudwick of Lansing, Michigan, Lucinda Sampson, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Lafayette (Ricky) Paschall of Jackson, Michigan; brothers, Henry Calhoun of Anderson, Indiana, Minister Lawrence (Betty) Calhoun of Alpine, Alabama and Larry Calhoun of Irvington, New Jersey; mother-in-law, Mrs. Louise Hurdle, whom he loved dearly of Brownsville, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Shirley Sangster of Brownsville, Tennessee; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including his good friend and helper, Orrick Ewing and his Godson, Jeffrey Benson, whom he loved and trusted to the moon and back.


Calhoun was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores Elizabeth; son, Victor; his parents; sisters, Eunice, Edna, and Juliette; and brother, Virgil.
