David (Lansing) Purnell

completed his work on the earth and transitioned to his new home in Heaven on Monday, December 1, 2015 at 10:35 a.m. at his residence. Age 86 years. He was born on September 28, 1929 to the late Clyde and Winnie (Herron) Purnell in Winona, Mississippi.
David was educated in the Vaiden Public School System. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Harmony, Mississippi. David relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he resided a number of years. In 1967, he moved to Lansing, Michigan and united with Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Charles S. Tolbert. David was a faithful member of Galilee Baptist Church where he served with the Male Chorus until his health failed. David retired from General Motors after thirty years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 652. He enjoyed fixing on cars, fishing and playing cards, especially poker.
His legacy of love and devotion will forever linger in the hearts of his loved ones, his wife, Hildred Purnell; four daughters, Eddie Mae Allen, Patricia Hobbs Campbell Costro, Michell Duncan and Alfia Purnell; nine sons, Willie McBride, Nakiswa Purnell, Marvin Gayden, David Hobbs, Winferd Hobbs, Joe Hobbs, Michael Hobbs, Clyde Purnell and Danny Buchanan; one sister, Christine Price of Chicago, Illilnois; one brother, Rev. Willie Louis Purnell of Grenada, Mississippi; two sisters-in-law, Vera Purnell of Chicago, Illinois, Alma Hayes of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; four brothers-in-law, Harold (Debra) Peters, Willie (Juanita) Peters, Alvin Peters and George Peters, all of Lansing, Michigan; a goddaughter; many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Winnie (Herron) Purnell, one son, Walter Wood, four brothers, Rev. Randolph Purnell, Walter B. Purnell, C. J. Purnell and Turner Purnell; four sisters, Lottie Mae Purnell, Liza Robinson, Ruthie D. Johnson and Isabella Robinson.
