I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
II Timothy 4:7
Mr. David Newton passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at his residence in Saginaw, Michigan. Age 74 years. He was born on January 20, 1948, in Marion, Louisiana, to the late Clarence Newton, Sr., and the late Lillie Bell Henderson Newton. Playfully known to his close friends and family as, “Cake,” he went on to graduate from Eastside High School, Class of 1967.
David was an avid lover of sports and a standout athlete excelling in basketball, football, and baseball which earned him a full-ride scholarship to Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. He enjoyed bowling and received two perfect score rings, and it might also be noted that he was the self-proclaimed “Ali” of dominos. David continued to broaden his horizons beyond college by becoming a member of the United States Army. His military career spanned twelve years, and he went on to become a Saginaw County Sheriff’s Deputy where he worked until retirement.
David had such a fun-loving spirit that captivated any room he entered. Whether it was his funny anecdotes, creating a nickname for everybody, playing with the kids, or rooting for his favorite team, the University of Michigan, he made a positive lasting impression on anyone he encountered. He exuded such a high level of intelligence. Always staying abreast of what was going on in the world, his love of writing, and his commitment to family. He truly was a one-of-a-kind guy. He will truly be missed.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Patricia Pleasant; two children, Michael (Monica) Newton of Houston, Texas, and Marlana (Andell) Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Madison and McKenzie Newton both of Houston, Texas, and Colin, Cass, and Chase Alexander, all of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Bertha Garrett and Mable Collins of Houston, Texas, and Retha Ridgell of West Monroe, Louisiana; two brothers, Charles (Chamrueng) Newton of San Antonio, Texas, and Steve Bell of Farmerville, Louisiana; three special nephews, Lawrence Newton, Stephon “Marbury” Vaughn and James Jr. (LaShawn) Vaughn, all of Saginaw, Michigan; two special nieces, Dorothy “Toni” Vaughn and Patricia Vaughn both of Saginaw, Michigan; close friends, Charles Dallas and Leon Clark; a host of other family and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Sr. and Lillie Bell Henderson Newton; four brothers, John L. Holly, Clarence Newton, Jr., Bobby Newton, and William Newton; and close friend, Garfield Lawson.
