Eunice Simmons

November 21, 1949 — February 21, 2014

Mrs. Eunice Simmons gained her heavenly wings and flew into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Age 64 years. She was born November 21, 1949 in Saginaw, Michigan to Ralph and Olean Bodiford.
Eunice was a 1968 graduate of Saginaw High School. She had been previously employed as a lunch aide at Heavenrich Elementary School and as a sales clerk for Kmart Corporation. In July 1978 she joined Lawrence Earl Simmons in holy matrimony. He survives her. Eunice was a faithful member of St. Luke C.M.E. Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Charles Braddock and Pastor Mae Joyce Redfern. Eunice was very active in her church. She was a member of the Stewardess Board #2, a leader of the Christian Youth Fellowship, organizer of the Womens Conference, vacation bible school leader, church van driver and she was the organizer of the yearly shopping trips to Chicago. Eunice served her community by working with the Democratic Party in the Get out to vote effort. She was a kind, loving and caring person who loved shopping, traveling, going out to eat and spending time with family. Everyone who knew and loved her will truly miss her presence.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 35 years, Lawrence Earl Simmons; two daughters, Fazliet Abernathy and Twyla Simmons; four sons, Larry Duane Abernathy, Edward Michael (Chante) Welch, Bruce (Miyoshia) Simmons, Ralph (Shontay) Simmons; one step-daughter, Vernida Hibbler; grandchildren, Demetrius, Douglas, Bruce and Eliza Simmons, Delvon, Raven, Amiya, Ralph and Elijah Simmons, LaNya Whittington, Deatria Humphrey, Tristan Hicks and DeJuan Nutt; one great-grandchild, Zion Journee Simmons; three sisters, Diane Bodiford, Charlene Bodiford and Geneva Embry; two brothers, Tommie and Andrew (Gloria) Bodiford; twenty-one nieces and two nephews; three aunts, Merzell McGhee, Jewell Davis and Margaret Diggs; one sister-in-law, Patricia Bell; three brothers-in-law, William Terry (Celestine) Simmons, Walter and Ernest Simmons; many other relatives and friends including her special friends, Sherry (Albert) Hannah, Josephine (Norris) Shephard and Takeisha (Theodis) Essex.
Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Olean Bodiford.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Pastor Mae Joyce Redfern, the St. Luke CME Church family and to everyone who offered kind words, condolences and prayers.
