Frederick Sherman

November 23, 1938 — March 5, 2013

Harmonica player and gospel evangelist, Frederick Sherman of Saginaw, Michigan passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Bronson Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan with his wife by his side. Age 74 years. He was born November 23, 1938 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Dock Sherman Sr. and Elvia Nicholas Sherman,
Frederick accepted Christ at an early age. He was educated in the Peabody School District of Alexandria, Louisiana. He later received his GED, a one year college certificate for computer technology and an evangelist ordination and license. He worked as a baker for several years while living in Alexandria, Louisiana. Frederick moved to Saginaw, Michigan in 1963 where he married Evangelist Martha Frazier. She survives him. He retired from Saginaw Grey Iron Foundry after 35 years of faithful service and was a member of UAW Local 668. Frederick was a member of Truevine Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Paul E. Broaddus. He was a member of the male chorus and occasionally played his harmonica. He traveled and performed with his wife at gospel concerts and festivals throughout the United States. They were known as the Gospel Keepers, a name created by Frederick. He was a member of Little Walters Harmonica Club in Alexandria, Louisiana. He credited his blues cousin with teaching him how to play the harmonica. As a teenager he would fill in for harmonica players Little Walter and Muddy Waters for many of their band appearances .
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife and devoted friend of 34 years, Evangelist Martha Sherman; children from a previous marriage, Priscilla (Alfred) Slaughter, Alexandria, Louisiana, Janice (Elwood) Henry, Saginaw, Michigan, Larry Sherman, Phoenix, Arizona, Lawrence (Greta) Sherman, Seattle, Washington; one step-daughter, Tywanna Sherman, Indianapolis, Indiana; two step-sons, Ben and Charles Frazier, both of Saginaw, Michigan; eight special grandchildren whom he helped raised, Elwood Henry Jr., Columbus, Ohio, Jonathan Henry, Tuscon, Arizona, Thomas Henry, Detroit, Michigan, Sommer, Saige, Benjamin and Senethea Frazier, Trevontez Woodhouse, all of Saginaw, Michigan; two brothers, John D. (Kim) Sherman, Weston Sherman, both of Alexandria, Louisiana; three sisters, Lillian Cherry, Mary Price and Olean McHanney, all of Alexandria, Louisiana; special nieces, Debra McHanney, Houston, Texas, Delores Sheman-Griffin, Lawton, Oklahoma, Betty and Yolanda Frazier, Saginaw, Michigan; special nephews, Richard Lewis, Raphell Cooper and Johnny Frazier, all of Saginaw, Michigan; special brothers-in-law, Reverend Camie Frazier, Reverend Hansome Frazier, Ellis Maise, all of Saginaw, Michigan; two godmothers, Elizabeth Lilly and Katherine Riley; musicians and singers who performed with him for the past 34 years, Dr. Luke (Claudia) Davis, Ernest Divinity and Willie Houston, all of New Orleans, Louisiana; many other relatives and friends uncluding two special work buddies, John Bond, James Cook and the Truevine Missionary Baptist Church Male Chorus.
Frederick was preceded in death by his parents, Dock Sr. and Elvia Sherman,one son, John Sherman, three brothers, Dock Sherman Jr., Archie and Joseph Sherman, one grand-daughter, Innetia Rhodes, one great-grandson, Jaheim Henry.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Bronson Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan, Pastor Paul E. Broaddus and the Truevine Missionary Baptist Church family, the Frazier family and Lewis family.
