With loving and compassionate hands our blessed Father gently lifted Geneva “GG” Brathwaite into a peaceful and eternal rest, slipping her into glory on Saturday, January 12, 2025, at 11:21 a.m. On Friday, July 29th, 1938, she was born in Camden, Alabama, the daughter of Elnora George and Dave Martin.
Geneva lived in Camden until the early part of 1960. GG relocated to New York City, where she resided until the mid-1980s with her son, Greg and other beloved family members. Geneva worked as a nurse before she worked at Lords and Taylors as a switchboard operator for twenty plus years when she lived in New York City. She relocated again to her beloved Atlanta, Georgia. When she relocated to Atlanta, she worked as a switchboard operator at Swissotel until she retired. There she lived the majority of her life for forty plus years. In 2018, Geneva moved to Lansing, Michigan to live with her son. Geneva was a God-fearing woman and was a long-term member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta for many years. GG would always say that she “never meets a stranger, because we are all God’s Children” living and fighting the duality of life together. GG would always have something to say that would make you laugh, and she would always be willing to hear any problems brought to her. My mother has always tried to live her life to its fullest and she tried to share her joys in life with those she met and loved to say something to make you laugh. ONE of GG’s latest found jokes was wanting to know “when did they let you out”? GG enjoyed shopping and her favorite place to shop was “Sally’s,” and secondhand stores. One of the things about GG is that if you were talking to her about something, her response may come out in a funny way and her response may make you but after you thought about her response for a minute or two, you’ll see the truth in what she may be saying to you. My mother was truly a ride or die for those she cared about. One of GG’s favorite sayings was “No one can ride your back if you keep it straight.”
Geneva “GG” leaves behind one son, Gregory Anthony Jackson; granddaughter, Jasmine Amaria Habba; step grandchildren, Jessica Roberson, Jason Keyton and Erica Rivia; two sisters, Bertha George and Ethel George McNeal; brother, Arthur George; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Betty Jo Lawrence; two brothers, James Edward George and Robert George.
