George Joe Washington (Lansing)

Mr. George Joe Washington aka “GW” “Big George” “Hotrod” “Pops” of Lansing, Michigan passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, after dealing with multiple medical issues in recent years at the age of 76 years old . George was born in Jackson, Michigan on Wednesday, November 19,1947, to Ruby Lee Powell and Willie Washington.

George graduated from Lansing J. W Sexton High School, then honorably served in the United States Marine Corp in the Vietnam War. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sgt in the Michigan National Guard. George proudly worked as a Paramedic/Police Officer for the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department, the Tri-County Community Mental Health Facility and The Oak Park YMCA in Lansing.

George had many hobbies. He spent many years developing his karate skills in competitions and attained a blackbelt in Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. He excelled at Bench press weightlifting, winning many competitions and received 1st place awards in Michigan, National and World Competitions in his age/weight class. Coaching the Lansing Mercy Mad Dogs Pop Warner Football team for years gave him much joy as he was able to work and develop some great kids. He loved fast, powerful cars including going to the drag strip and competing in car shows.

Surviving to cherish sweet memories of their time together are his children, family and friends he had throughout his lifetime.
