Glendora "Glen" Chambers-Johnson, D.O. (East Lansing)

September 13, 1943 — September 1, 2018

Dr. Glendora "Glen" Chambers-Johnson passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan in Lansing, Michigan. Age 74 years. Glen, never Glendora, was born September 13, 1943 in Mobile, Alabama to Vernice and Leonard Chambers, the second of their five children. When she was two years old, the family took a long train ride north to Chester, Pennsylvania to join her father at their new home. Growing up in Chester, she rode bikes, climbed trees, played games and beat up the neighborhood boys; her happiness only marred by the sudden death of her father in 1955.

Glen graduated from Chester High School in 1962 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), but she wanted more. She enrolled at Temple University School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she became a Registered Nurse (RN). Specializing in Obstetrics, she moved to Detroit, Michigan where she became the head nurse in OB-Delivery at Hutzel Hospital.

During this time, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine initiated a new program to recruit nurses into medical school. Glen knew that she could do more and soon enrolled in the program. After getting her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), she practiced as a family physician in Detroit for several years, until she joined the Ford Motor Company as a physician specializing in Occupational Medicine. In 1989, she was offered the chance to head her own practice in Lansing, Michigan, where she continued to practice until her retirement.

Glen was fun to be around; always strong willed, spirited and full of energy with a mysterious beauty and a Mona Lisa smile that drew people to her. She was popular with the boys, but she ignored much of this attention, until she met the love of her life, Lonnie Johnson, while she was in medical school. The pair were married in 1975, and had a large family. She loved all her children, but the light of her life was her grandchildren. They meant the world to her and were always able to bring a smile to her face and joy to her heart. You could always find one or more of them sitting in her lap, even after they had grown up.

She is survived by her six children, Tonya (Ian) Fitzpatrick, Linda (Bryan) Leek, Carla (Donald) Gillery, Daniele Johnson, Kyle (Jennelle) Johnson and Charles (Mari) Johnson; 10 grandchildren, Brittany, Brooke, Kaleb, Ian, Jared, Michai, Kayla, Jesse, Xavier and Taiga; great-grandson, Lonnie; four siblings, Lenora Koyton, Vernice Anthony, Michelle Chambers and Leonard Charles (Martha) Chambers; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including her best friend of over 50 years, Shirley Scott.

Her husband, Lonnie preceded her in death in 2012 as well as her parents.
