Gordon Junior Walkinhood (Lansing)

Mr. Gordon Junior Walkinhood, affectionately  known as “Gordy”, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the University of Michigan Health Sparrow, Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 90 years old. He was born on Thursday, June 7, 1934, in Marshall, Michigan, the son of Harold Gordon Walkinhood and Mary May Annis.

Gordy grew up in a rural area and loved to help his family by picking corn silk or whatever else he could do to help out. He enjoyed boxing with friends and hunting. Gordy had many religious ties in his younger years. After graduating high school, Gordy joined the Army on Tuesday, August 4, 1955, finding it to be the perfect outlet and he thrived while there. He earned medals for sharpshooting and good conduct. He was proud to serve his country and earned his Honorable Discharge on Wednesday, May 22, 1957. Gordy later moved to Lansing, Michigan and began a 30-year career with General Motors Corporation. Before retiring from General Motors Corporation, he met the love of his life, Deloris and they soon married and enjoyed 34 years of marriage before she passed away in 2016.

Gordy leaves to cherish his memory 5 children, Gary (Cathy) Walkinhood, Teresa (Knapp) Walkinhood, Carol (Robert) Shankster, Jay Walkinhood, and Tige (Shelley) Walkinhood; 4 stepchildren, DoLaura Hunt, DeShele Freeman, Dionne Johnson, and Arthur Hammond; grandchildren, Scott (Julie), Brent, Shannon (Luke), Brian (Erica), Catrina, Joshua (Colleen), Mitchell (Amber), Chaley (H.G.), Ian (Samantha), Danielle, Alexander, Charles Campbell Jr., Rashawna Prince, Amber Gordy, and Anthony Freeman; many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Geraldine (James) Thomas., Barbara Baker, and Kay Taylor; brothers-in-law, Jesse (Diane) Davis, Johnnie Davis, Roger Davis, Charles (Roslyn) Davis, Terry Davis, Gene (Denise) Davis, and Ronnie Wilson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, the French Family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Deloris Walkinhood, parents, granddaughter, Melissa Walkinhood, daughter-in-law, Peggy Walkinhood,  sister, Thelma Jean Russell; sisters-in-law, Sharon Wilson and Lee Davis, brothers-in-law, Robert Davis, James Taylor, and mother of his son, Marklyn Stowell.
