Henry Cheeks Sweeney departed this life on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the blessed age of 77 years. He was one of ten children born to Clarence Edwards Cheeks and Felicia Sweeney Cheeks. He was born on July 15, 1935 in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
His family relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina but at the tender age of thirteen, he was sent back to Simpsonville, South Carolina leaving behind three brothers and six sisters, AD, Thomas, Robert Allen, Clara, Gladys, Nancy, Roberta, Maxine, and Catherine (Dot) Cheeks. Henry matured from a boy to man under the loving care of his mothers nephew and wife, Rev. and Mrs. USG Sweeney, alongside his second cousins Ulysses, James, Robert and Elaine. He was adopted and carried the Sweeney name from this point on. After high school, he joined the United States Navy where he served four years. While in the navy, he got a chance to do what he loved most.fighting. Henry became a boxer, and a good one at that. When he returned to Simpsonville, SC he was driving a 1955 two-toned (brown and gold) Chevy that had electric windows and air conditioning. This was something that was the talk of the town back in those days. He was married three times and had a total of ten children. Many people knew him as Mr. Sweeney, the bus driver for Saginaw High School. He also drove across the country for numerous churches. Back home in Simpsonville, South Carolina, he was lovingly known as Cheekie Boy. Reverend Henry C. Sweeney was called into the ministry and ordained with the duty of spreading the word of God. He has preached at many churches in Saginaw for many years. Through his ministries, many lives have been changed for Christ. He was devoted to Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church alongside his Pastor, Rev. Miles Franklin. Many people have numerous stories and tales to tell about this man and if you ask him about his past hed respond, I did that and a whole lot more, but I made it right with God. He enjoyed his life and loved the Lord whole heartedly.
He leaves to cherish his memory his nine children, Thomas Sweeney, Allen Sweeney, Claudia Lewis-Williams, Marilyn Sweeney, Tracy Sweeney, Shannon Anderson, Henry C. Sweeney Jr., Grant Sweeney and Sheri Sweeney; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends including special friends, Deloise Wolfe, Tony, Jason, Al Beasley, Jessie Rowe, Moriah Matthews and a huge loving family of Cheeks and Sweeneys.
He was preceded in death by his beloved father, Clarence Cheeks, mother, Felicia Sweeney Cheeks, brothers, AD and Robert Allen, one sister, Catherine (Dot), and son, Gregory Sweeney
