Horace DeVance went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Saginaw Senior Care at the age of 87 years. He was born March 17, 1928 in Rosedale, Louisiana to the late Henry DeVance, Sr. and Betsy Collins DeVance.
Horace grew up in Rosedale, Louisiana, where he also attended public school. He enlisted in the United States Army and fought bravely during the Korean Conflict, receiving a Korean Service Medal and a Bronze Campaign Star. Upon completion of his military service, Horace received an honorable discharge. Horace married Beulah Mae Donahue and from this union, two daughters, Joyce and Joanne, were born. He moved his family to Saginaw, Michigan to find employment. He was employed by Saginaw Malleable Iron Foundry for 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Union Local 455.
Horace enjoyed fishing and hunting. While fishing with his son-in-law, Horace caught the biggest fish of his life, a 12 pound walleye. He wasnt happy when he had to throw the fish back because everyone was over the catch limit. Horace also enjoyed laughing and playing jokes on his friends and family.
Mr. DeVance was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church before becoming ill. He enjoyed attending Sunday School as well as Sunday service. He was a quiet but faithful Christian and was very serious about church. The rule was, if his daughters wanted to date on the weekend, they must have attended Sunday school and church the Sunday before. He tried to instill his beliefs in others, especially his grandchildren. He held on to a copy of the New Testament throughout the Korean Conflict. He would often say while showing that tattered Bible, this book brought me through the war.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Joanne (Ralph) Battle, Farmington Hills, Michigan, Joyce DeVance, Saginaw, Michigan; Viola (Arthur) Johnson, Denham Springs, Louisiana; one brother, John (Frances) DeVance, Pittsburg, California; two sisters, Henrietta James, Rosedale, Louisiana, Beatrice Harris, Los Angeles, California; a special niece, Yolanda Mims, New Orleans, Louisiana; special grandchildren; nieces, nephews, in-laws and other relatives too numerous to list.
Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Henry DeVance, Sr. and Betsy Collins DeVance, his wife, Beulah Mae DeVance, one son, Robert Earl DeVance, a sister, Daisy Watson, two brothers, Henry DeVance, Jr. and James DeVance, one sister, Mary Jackson.
Horace is now in the presence of the Lord and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
