James Armstrong (Lansing)

James Arthur Armstrong passed away June 28, 2023, at Sparrow Health Systems Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Age 74 years. He was born December 27, 1948, in Lansing, Michigan to parents Melvin V. Armstrong and Juanita Hopkins.

James graduated from J.W. Sexton High School in 1967 and went on to work for the State of Michigan in the Corrections Department until retirement.

He was an avid golfer; at one point he was one of the top 60 golfers in the state of Michigan. James enjoyed being a member of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, Silver Leaf Lodge #534. He also enjoyed going to the casino and traveling.

Above all else, even golf, James loved his family. He loved bringing joy to his grandchildren and spending time with his family. James’s chartable heart always led him within the community.

James leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 16 years, Bonnie J. Armstrong of Lansing, Michigan; 2 sons, James A. (Candice) Armstrong and Jeffrey (Anne’Ka) Armstrong of Lansing, Michigan; 2 step-daughters, Michele Love (Mark) of Lansing, Michigan and Venessa Love of Fenton, Michigan; step-son, Keonta Baker of Lansing, Michigan; 15 grandchildren, Amir Armstong, Jacob Armstrong, Muhammed Armstrong, Samiyah and Arrayah Armstrong, Jamila and Zariah Marzette, Malcolm Marzette-Armstrong, Asia Armstrong, Samuel Armstrong, Montez Love, Darrion Love, Dijion Love, Zareah Rushing, Aaliyah Ladd, and Kylah Baker; 7 great-grandchildren, Marquise Marzette, Mia, Jayce, and Ella Armstrong, Mykhi Love, Avery Love, and Aria Love; 2 brothers, Walter (Ursula) Perry of Kansas and Fred (Irene) Hiller of Lansing, Michigan; sister-in-law, Gloria Davis of Lansing, Michigan; and many other relatives and friends, including the Community of Gilford Circle Neighborhood.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Hopkins-Simmons; father, Melvin V. Armstrong; 2 sisters, Sharon Saleem and Lucy Lilly; 2 brothers, Garland Parks and Chester Davis; and granddaughter, Assiya Armstrong.
