James B. Smith

Mr. James B. Smith passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at St. Marys of Michigan Medical Center at the age of 84 years. He was born June 6, 1930 in Marvel, Arkansas to the late Jeff and Beulah (Bridges) Smith.
James resided in Bridgeport, Michigan with his loving wife, Sue Welch-Smith. At a very early age, he gave his life to God. He was a people person, and he was always willing to help his fellowman. He enjoyed spending time with his family, writing, debating with friends, mentoring, counseling, cooking and joking around. James received his bachelors degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and his masters degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing. He was principal of Downes Elementary and Highland Park Elementary Schools in Buena Vista, Michigan, and he served in administration at Buena Vista School District Central Office before becoming superintendent of the District. James also served with the Corp of Engineers in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
From a very early age, his passion was always helping others and putting other people before himself. James possessed an unparalleled zest for life, positive attitude and strong faith that made him a genuine joy to be around. He was an avid businessman, always looking for a project to jump into. After retiring as Superintendent of Buena Vista School District, James worked in non-profit urban educational research under auspices of his Humanity for Humanity organization.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Sue Welch-Smith; two sons, Jeffrey and Mitch; two grandchildren, Kennedy and Quinton; one sister, ONeal Hudson; one niece, Doris Hudson; one nephew, Albert Hudson; many aunts, uncles and cousins; eight sisters-in-law including Alda Smith, widow of his twin brother, Jessie; two brothers-in-law; many other relatives and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Beulah Smith, and his twin brother, Jessie Smith.
Those we hold most dear never truly leave us they live on in the kindness they showed, the comfort they shared and the love they brought into our lives. Continue to cherish the memories of James B. Smith who may have empowered, enlightened or enriched your life. His spirit lives on.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Marys of Michigan Medical Center Cardiac Department.
