James E. Swilley "Tamp"

June 26, 1949 — December 13, 2020

God in His infinite wisdom called the name of our dear beloved, James Edward “Tamp” Swilley, to return home with Him on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

James made his grand entrance to William E. Swilley and Mary Ellen West (Mickey) on June 26, 1949 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. James, affectionately known as “Tamp” was raised by his father, and Essie Mae Swilley, making him the eldest of his six siblings; David (Mattie) Swilley, Jacqueline (David) Prescott, Lovette Swilley, Yvonne (Harry) Hubbard, Steffond (Dianne) Swilley, and Tyrone Swilley. James was the patriarch, and many looked up to and loved him.

James was a graduate of Saginaw High School, Class of 1967. He also attended Central Michigan University. He devoted 37 years of labor to General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear and was a member of UAW Local 699. He spent countless hours guiding, coaching, and inspiring young athletes to carry out their dreams, helping them to achieve their fullest potential. He gave a lot of love and attention and took them under his wings.

James was a faithful member of Saginaw First Assembly of God, under the leadership of Pastor Kurt Cullison. He served on the Usher Board and attended many Kingdom Building events within the ministry. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23, “The lord is my shepherd…” James was a God fearing man who stood on principle and his spiritual beliefs. He was a strong man that never complained. Mr. Swilley would always be there to help others in their time of need, no matter how big or small. He would often give encouragement by saying, “Keep ya head up” and “Aye, you’ll be alright.” He enjoyed life to the fullest and left His mark everywhere he went. He spent quality time with his children and grandchildren and deposited his wisdom on them every opportunity he was given. He couldn’t be more proud to have had a set of twin grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. James made sure he always took care of his responsibilities, going out of the way to get the job done. Mr. James E. “Tamp” Swilley will be truly missed.

James took great pride in his appearance and was known as a “sharp dresser” in the most dapper suits. He enjoyed attending sports games, dining out with family and friends, and traveling across the country. There will never be another like him.

James was preceded in death by his parents, William E. (Essie Mae) Swilley, Mary Ellen West; grandparents, William and Lula Swilley; siblings, Walter Lee Moton, Janet Moton, and Freddie Mae West; great-grandson, Jermar D. Swilley; nephew, Steffond Swilley, Jr.; uncles, Joe N. Swilley, James “Pop” Swilley, Theotis Swilley; aunts, Lovie Williams and Azalee Claiborn.

James leaves to carry out his legacy three children, Jasmine Swilley, Jermar Swilley, Sr., Craig Sr. (Sheila) Meredith; grandchildren; Jermar Swilley Jr., Philip Patton Jr., Jaleel Swilley, Jaylah Swilley, Shanteasha Meredith, Craig Merideth Jr.; stepchildren, Brian (Alexis) Mitchell, Kristina Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Jermar III, Jamari, Journei, and Ja’mir Swilley; nephews, Kareem, Demetri, Jermaine,Corey, and Tyrone Jr.; nieces, Tosha, Felicia, Keisha, Kuhani, Ciara, Steffanie, and Courtney; uncle, Beanie West; close friend, Harry Redeemer; special cousin, Dorothy Tarver; many other relatives and friends.

An integral man with such class, style, grace, and charisma, it was an honor to know and love him. Truly, Tamp was one of a kind, and a true soldier. He will be missed, and forever in our hearts! Until we meet again, rest well...
