James Gant (Lansing)

James Lawrence Gant went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 3, 2019 at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Age 87 years. He was born October 26, 1931 in Pensacola, Florida to Forest Gant and Addie Johnson Gant.

James enlisted in the United States Army on October 8, 1952. He was a Korean Era Conflict, Vietnam Era Conflict, and Peacetime Veteran. He retired Honorably on November 30, 1973 after 21 years of active service. He received a purple heart for wounds he received in action in the Republic of South Vietnam on November 18, 1967. James was a true Patriot.

James was a regular at the Ingham County Veterans PTSD Counseling Sessions on Thursday. The family wants to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Frankie Skanes for faithfully accompanying James to these meetings. He looked forward to going to them, fellow-shipping with the members and bragging about his children and grandchildren.

James leaves to cherish his memories his wife of over 50 years Dortha Gant; his children, Larry Gant, Fred Gant, Bruce (Evette) Gant, Jackie Gant, Patricia Spitzley, Denise Gant and Kameshia Gant; grandchildren, Bruce Jr., Courtney, Carla, Ashanti, Gabrielle, Jasmine, Jordan, and Trevor; sister, Alma Berry; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. James’ village was large, he had a large extended family in both in Michigan and Pensacola, Florida. He also had a great many friends that were also considered family. The family would like to recognize special army friends, John Goss and Jimmie Nelson. He was loved and respected.

He was preceded in death by his father, Forest Gant; his mother Addie Gant; daughter, Delores Gant-Moye; son, Carlton Gant; grandson, Carlton Gant, Jr.; sisters, Rose, Agnes, Lena, Elizabeth, Jeanette and Amelia; brothers, Issac and Edward.

We would like to extend our appreciation and love to the Holmes Road Church of Christ where James and Doris were long-time members.
