James Siwak passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the age of 68. Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 16, 1956, Jim's life was a testament to resilience and a deep-seated commitment to helping others.
Growing up in Warren, Michigan, he was cherished by his parents, Mary and Bert Siwak, and older sisters Rosemary and Nancy. Despite facing significant medical challenges from a young age – challenges that defied initial prognoses – Jim thrived. His early education included specialized schooling, followed by his time at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, where he was taught braille and large print reading. As a result of his many years at MSB, he developed several life-long friendships. Decades later and coincidently, he provided caregiving services to his former school teacher from whom he learned braille as well as offering assistance and companionship to his friends and others in need.
During his school years in Lansing, Jim excelled in a variety of sports and achieved notable success in the Special Olympics, earning several medals. He never shied away from learning new sports including snow and cross country skiing. Lansing became his home, and he resided at Washington Woods for an extraordinary period, becoming the longest-tenured resident in its history. His lifestyle included many years of enjoyment at Cottonwood Campground, indulging in the shopping networks, and active participation in several bowling leagues - a testament to his competitive spirit and his enduring friendships. His bowling team was even in first place at the time of his passing. He was also a devoted music enthusiast, possessing an impressive collection and an uncanny ability to identify artists and songs. Remarkably, his technical aptitude was equally impressive, effortlessly navigating computers, mobile phones, and other electronics despite his visual impairment. Many of his friends often called upon him to assist in the setup or connection of their electronic devices.
During the past decade, Jim found a strong sense of community and fulfillment as a member of the Mason Holt Eagles #3734, serving proudly as an officer and holding the position of Worthy Outside Guard in 2024-2025. He was a beloved member known for his infectious enthusiasm and vibrant personality.
The strong connections he forged with those around him will be deeply missed and his memory will be a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew him. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Franks, and predeceased by his parents, Mary and Bert Siwak, and his sister, Rosemary Green.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Mason Holt Eagles #3734, 1111 North Cedar Street, Mason, Michigan 48854.
A luncheon celebrating Jim's life will be held at the Mason Holt Eagles Club (address above) on Saturday, March 29, at 1:00 PM. All family and friends are welcome to attend.
