Joe Self, Iii (Lansing)

Mr. Joe Self, III passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021 at McLaren Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. He was 67 years old. Joe was born January 22, 1954 in Itta Bena, Mississippi to Joe, II and Arnett Mae Self.

Joe, affectionately called “Hammer” had resided in Lansing, Michigan for the past 30+ years. For him, Lansing was a place of joy, peace, and happiness. He was a clever person, and a little known fact about him was he enrolled in community college and earned a diploma in General Education. For many years, Joe’s occupation was a semi-truck driver. Joe worked hard and successfully saved enough money to purchase his own semi, therefore fulfilling his dream of becoming a self-employed business owner. He loved to travel, so much so that he could drive to any state with his eyes closed. He also enjoyed cooking, and his older styled classic cars. But what he genuinely loved the most was his family, all 17 siblings. Joe was a true family man and loved being surrounded by his family and friends.
Joe touched so many lives uniquely in different ways. He was our strong rock and “Hammer”. He’s gone home to be with the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters, Tori Self, Denise Self, Carolyn Self, Jennifer Smith, Neveah Vincent; three sons, Ricky Self, Dewaun Bush, and Joseph Self; one step-son; Matthew; three grand- children, Denisha Self, Darius Self, Kolby Blake; eight sisters, Quincy Warren, Martha-Jean (Eddie) Williams, Sherry Self, Brenda Self, Arnetta Self, Cynthia Self, Lisa (Altwan) Self-Chambers, Sandra (Morris) Davis; four brothers, Ivory (Patricia Ann) Self, Melvin (Shirley Ann) Self, Lorenzo Self, Carlos “the morning star” Self; uncles, Jacob Jerome Self, Sammie Self; many other relatives including more uncles, an abundance of cousins, friends, including special friends Joe Crenshaw, Loretta Self, Aaron Edwards, Louise “Weezy” Self and his partner of more than 30 years Norma Jean Jackson.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Sammie “Earl” Self and Mary Self.
