Julia Townsend Jones Scruggs (Lansing)

Mrs. Julia Mae Townsend Jones Scruggs, 77, was born in Indianola, Mississippi on January 17, 1947. Julia was the first of eleven children born to William Sr. and Anna Townsend. Julia made her heavenly transition on September 6, 2024, surrounded by her son, siblings, and family members.

Julia was educated through the Lansing Public Schools. She graduated in 1965 from J. W. Sexton High School. She furthered her education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. While at WMU she pledged and joined the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Julia was employed and retired after thirty years of service to the State of Michigan as an accountant. She also served as a MSEA and UAW Union Representative during this time. 

Julia was family oriented and loved spending time with her family. Taking her son and younger siblings to the circus, fair, parks, parades and teaching them to play card games were some of her favorite things to do with family. Julia also enjoyed playing bingo and going to casinos.

Julia leaves to cherish her memories, her son, DeAndre Jones; granddaughter, Deonna Jones (Thaddous Williams III); great-grandchildren, Deonesty Jones, Thaddous Williams IV, and Zoe Williams; siblings, Hazel Davis, James Townsend, Linda Prewitt, Annette (Monwell) McGee, Vernell Harris, Rosie Taylor, and Phillip Townsend; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, inculding best friends, Tina Collins and Dr. Arthur Lee Jackson – AKA “Cookie”.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Scruggs; her parents, William Sr. and Anna Townsend; and three brothers, William Jr., Huda and Amos Townsend.
