Mrs. Katie M. Woods passed away after a lengthy illness Monday, November 26, 2012 at her residence. Age 85 years. Katie was born August 11, 1927 in Paducah, Kentucky to William and Phyllis Bennett.
Katie married Stephen Barnet Woods and from that union six children were born, Phyllis, Bettie, Early, William and Tracy Woods. She was a member of South 17th Street Church of Christ. Katie was a graduate of Lincoln High School. She continued her education at West Kentucky Vocational Training School and graduated as a Master Chef. Chef Katies food was served at five-star restaurants and she was known and admired internationally for her cooking expertise. She retired as Head Cook from Grey Iron Foundry. After retirement, she opened Katies Fine Foods. Katie and S. Barnett fed hundreds of people at their home every Sunday. Many Airmen from Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Michigan were weekend regulars for more than ten years. Katie and S. Barnett never turned anybody away at any time.
Katie leaves to cherish her precious memory her children, Phyllis Jackson, Bettie Vargas, Early Railey, William and Tracy Woods; grandchildren, Rodney Kelly, Rhonda (Kenneth) Green, Regina (Juan) Hilburn, Phiedra Patton, Reynard Vargas Sr., Rodrick Vargas, Alfred Kelly III, Bo (Bryant) Miller, Kisha Thomas, Delwyn, Phiedra, Arthur and Nyvasha Woods; twenty-eight great grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends; extended family members, Nolan and Earleen Smithers, Winston Travis and Douglas Carter,
The family appreciates and offers special thanks to Dr. B. Singh and nurse Sue, Dr. Sadia Khan, Dr. Umar Kahn, Dr. Asim Khan, Dr. Boike, Dr. J. Bartnik, Dr. Kocheril and nurse Vivian, B. Friedenberg, RN and Covenant Healthcare Medical Centers medial staff who attended our mom, also a special thanks to our sister, Early for caring for our mom.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Phyllis Bennett; husband, S. Barnett Woods; daughter, Vera Woods-Garrett; siblings, Howard Bennett, Floradeen Bennett and William Watts; grandson, Randall S. O. Jackson.
