Latchie Washington-Chesney went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with her family by her side on Friday, August 23, 2013 at St. Marys of Michigan. Age 75 years. She was born April 1, 1938 in Walls, Mississippi to Julious and Clara Washington.
Latchie came to Saginaw, Michigan at a young age. She graduated from Saginaw High School class of 1956 later attending and graduating from Central Michigan University. She married William (Punkin) Chesney and to this union four children. Latchie was hired as the first African American woman at Consumers Power and was later employed at Michigan Bell where she retired from AT&T (formerly Michigan Bell) after 39 years of service. She was a faithful member of Zion Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Rodrick A. Smith where she served with the Caring Hands Ministry and the NAACP Membership Committee. She also served on the Board of Directors for both Wildfire and Bethel A.M.E. Church Credit Unions, a member of the Altrusa Community Service group and the Saginaw High School Class of 1956 planning committee. Latchie will be truly missed by all that knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her four loving children and their spouses, Julious L. (Cindy) Washington, Troy L. Chesney, Trent L. Chesney, Tiffany L. (Bobby) Hendrix; ten grandchildren including four very special grands, Chez, Tiffany, Cameron and Cassidy; her mother, Clara Washington; one sister, Viola (Pollie) Bates; one niece, Cangela (Renee) Williams; a special daughter, Karen Winchester-Gardner; a very special and dedicated friend, Earleen Smithers, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
Latchie was preceded in death by her father, Julious Washington; aunts, Latchie Williams, Lena (Sugar) Meredith, Mary Ross and Fanny (Boot Jac) Canada.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of St. Mary's of Michigan Medical Center 6th floor ICU team, Dr. PK, Dr. SU and the staff of University of Michigan Medical team.
