On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, Leah Mae Lowery, our devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, & friend passed away at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital to go home to the Lord. The second of five children born to Arthur Moore, Jr., and Johnny Patricia Goodbee, Leah Mae Moore entered this world on November 19, 1946, in Denham Springs, Louisiana.
After the passing of her mother, Leah’s father would move with her and her brother, James, to Carrollton, Michigan, where he would later meet and marry Katie Clara Passmore. As a result of this union Leah gained five additional siblings. Leah matriculated through the Carrollton, Michigan School System graduating from Carrollton High School. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Shiloh Baptist Church. Leah would eventually be led to Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church where she faithfully served on the Usher Board for many years.
After Leah graduated high school, she immediately went to work at St. Mary’s Hospital as a Surgical Technician where she was employed for 43 years. Leah was so great at her job that she would give Dr. Malcolm Field the surgical instrumentals before he could call them out during surgery. She was his #1 Surgical Technician. She retired in 2010, at which time she was the most senior person employed by the hospital.
Leah met the love of her life, Joseph Lowery Jr., in 1966 at Joe’s Aunt Stella’s home. After a long courtship they were married on April 17, 1971 and remained in a loving and committed marriage for over 50 years. Joe was her Sweet Pea, and he called her Mae. Through this union, they were blessed with two children; a loving and devoted daughter, Marla Lynn, and devoted and dutiful son, Joseph III. She was also blessed with a stepson, Anthony Lamar Pasley.
Leah Mae (Le’Mae) as she was affectionately known, had a passion for gardening, knitting, vacationing and taking pictures; however, she was most passionate about spending time with her precious jewel, granddaughter, MaLeah, who would uplift her spirit and light up her day. She was the sparkle in her Gram’s eye. When you walked into a room, they would just start laughing; a true indication that Leah and MaLeah had snuck ice cream, cookies, candy and who knows what else. Being a well-rounded individual, she enjoyed listening to the Blues as well as good old Gospel quartet music. Leah loved to bake, and when the Thompson children would come to town for a visit, she would always send them back with some baked goods, canned preserves and of course her famous hand-knitted dish towel combination potholders. Leah especially enjoyed spending time with her family and the weekly couples outing with the Thompson’s and the McDonald’s run afterwards.
Leah was preceded in death by both parents, Arthur and Johnny Moore Jr.; sisters, Rosetta Moore, Grace Helen Moore, Vera Williams; brother, Donald Ray Moore; father and mother-in-law, Hollis (Mary) Lowery; sisters-in-law Zella (Kenner) Edwards, Ester D. (Robert) Paige, Lula B. Lowery; brothers-in-law, Willie (Irene) Palmore, Tyrone Lowery; special aunt, Louelee G. (Alex) Tillman.
She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Marla Lowery, Davenport, Florida , Joseph Lowery III, Saginaw, Michigan; Anthony Lamar Pasley of Alabama; one grand-daughter, MaLeah Sharelle Joell, Davenport, Florida; step-mother, Katie Moore; siblings James (Jean) Moore, Connie (Leroy) Chatman, Charolet Stuckey all of Saginaw, Michigan; Arthur (Cynthia) Moore III, Beverly Hills, Michigan; Donald (Karen) Moore, Detroit, Michigan; special cousin, Ruby Rheams; god-daughter, Maeria Danielle (DeMarkus) Taylor, Douglasville, Georgia; brother-in-law Jimmy (Evelyn) Lowery; sisters-in-law, Mary Hudson, Dorothy (James) Knight, Cornelia (Roy) Wilson, all of Montgomery, Alabama; special friends, Callie Tina McGee, Gloria Thompson, Cynthia Cooper, Frances Irvin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
