Legretta Williams (Lansing)

April 16, 1945 — June 7, 2024

Legretta Williams was the first-born child of Harrison and Annie Mae Evans. She was born on April 16, 1945. Legretta attended Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana and shortly after married Eugene Williams, from that union of seventeen years were born two daughters, Vanessa and Angela Williams. Legretta continued her education at Lansing Community College in the field of dentistry and worked in retail while living in Miami, Florida. Legretta was devoted to her faith and active in church. She attended bible study regularly and had daily prayer with her prayer partner Mildred Pugh.

As the oldest child Legretta learned responsibility early, her chores consisted of cleaning the house and babysitting her two younger siblings (Thelma and Sonny). Legretta was known as the stern Big sister and later mother. She kept her daughters close and raised them in the church. Legretta was also everybody’s favorite aunt; nieces and nephews have multiple stories of time spent with Auntie Legretta.

In addition, Legretta loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. While hospitalized and in hospice, visits from grandchildren created a glow in her eyes and a huge smile on her face. God and family were her main focus in life and she gave endlessly to both.

Our beloved Legretta transitioned from life to eternity on June 7, 2024. She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Angela (Charles) Lewis; ten grandchildren, Carlita Pops, Edgar Pops Jr., Derrick Pops, Quanta’e Pops, Demarlon Pops, Lae Parrie Pops, Kevin Carson, Iyonna Carson-Pops, LaShawntelle Carson-Pops, Sabreea (Caleb) O’Brien; eleven great-grandchildren (two special great- grandchildren Miere Pops and Kingkiel Lamb); five sisters, Thelma Barnes, Rosemary (Bishop Michael) Butler, Darlene (Brian) Velez, Elnora Evans, and JoAnn (Elder Robert) Evans; three brothers; Raymond (Jennifer) Evans, Darrell (Mariynn), Albert (Evangelist LouKecia) Evans; three aunts; Hattie Lawson, Rose Jackson, and Jean (John) Eaton; plus a host of nieces (great nieces) and nephews (great nephews).
