Ms. Lela Mae Thompson graduated to glory on Thursday, December 23, 2021, peacefully at her home in Lansing, Michigan lovingly surrounded by her family at age 77 years old. She was born the daughter of C.W. Thompson and Willie Mae Florence on September 29, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Lela attended school in Birmingham, Alabama, and was a member of the first senior class to graduate from Hayes High School in 1962. After high school, Lela moved to Lansing, Michigan where she was employed at General Motors Corporation for 38 years, retiring in 2016 and was a proud member of UAW Local 652. Lela accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was an active member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church until her health declined. Lela enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching “cowboy pictures”, as she called them; doing puzzles, and was an excellent cook. She was especially proud to be a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother because she loved playing with her great-grandchildren, and loved spending time with her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her 4 children, Cynthia Richardson, Theron “Tim” Richardson, Dwayne Thompson (Jackie Salazar), and Antoine Cooks all of Lansing, Michigan; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Bell; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; many special cousins; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Reginald Thompson; grandson, Cameron Kayden Atwood; her parents; brothers, John C. Thompson and Willie James Thompson.
