Mr. Leo Mathis Jr. “Redman” passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022 at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born June 2, 1962 in Saginaw, Michigan to Rubin and Susie Lee Mathis.
Leo attended Carrollton Community Schools. He accepted Jesus into his life at an early age, and attended church with his grandparents. Redman was a cheerful and loving son, father, brother, grandfather and uncle who was always willing to help and who cared about the people around him. He liked working with his hands and could repair bikes, cars, and most things that were broken. Redman loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his great-nephews, Freddie Beverly and Wyatt Mathis. Redman will be greatly missed by all who knew and love him.
He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Edmond L. Irvin of Saginaw, Michigan; grandchildren, Darious T. Phillips, Elis S. Jackson, Ed’marionna R. Irvin, all of Saginaw; mother, Susie Lee Mathis; stepmother, Adean Wilkerson; five siblings, Evelyn (Leron) Atkins, Kimberly Mathis, Tami Houston, AngaLee Mathis, Valarie Mathis, and Tracey (Larry) Coston; fifteen nieces, twelve nephews; many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; special friend, Virginia Marlow.
Leo was preceded in death by his father, Rubin Leo Mathis; maternal grandparents, James and Lillie Mae Brodus, paternal grandparents, Rubin and Elma Mathis; brother, Willis Mathis; uncle, Oscar Brodus, and aunt, Magatha Paris.
The family would like to express special thanks to Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, Guardianship Services, and to various individuals, professional and otherwise, who assisted Leo with his health throughout his life, and Ivan E. Phillips and the Staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel.
