Mr. Leon Robert Gilliam, Sr. passed away Monday, April 6, 2020 at Medilodge of Frankenmuth, Michigan at the age of 82 years. He was born January 8, 1938 in Clarksvilee, Tennessee to George E. and Gelodine (Thacker) Gilliam.
Leon accepted Christ at an early age while attending New Hope Baptist Church and later made Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church his church home. He graduated from Burt High School, “Class of 1956.” He later moved to Saginaw, Michigan and a UAW Local 1098 member.
Leon was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Smothers; great-granddaughter, Kemiah Gilliam; parents, George E. and Gelodine Gilliam; brother, George F. Gilliam.
He is survived by his son, Leon R. Gilliam, Jr.; daughter, Elizabeth A. Gilliam; three brothers, Vernon D. (Margaret) Gilliam, Howard W. (Flora) Gilliam, Henry L. (Mary) Gilliam; three sisters, Margaret (Charles) Felton, Shirley M. (William) Thomas, Barbara A. (Nate) Maples; three grandsons, Michael, Leon III, Ronnie Gilliam; five granddaughters, Shannon Rogers, Shivetta Smothers, Sharhonda Jones, Monique Smith, Ashley Rogers; twelve great-grandchildren; dedicated mother of his children, Susie Mae Hoosier.
Leon R. Gilliam Sr. was loved by many and the family would like to extend their gratitude to those who have shown up for our family in various ways. We are grateful for cards sent, flowers, comforting words and all support. Special thank you to Ivan E. Phillips and the Staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel. May God bless you all.
