Lilia Margarita Lara Martinez, age 75, formerly of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana. Lilia was born June 10, 1948, in Laredo, Texas, to the late Fransisco and Guadalupe (Martinez) Lara.
Lilia held her Native American heritage close to her heart. She was extremely proud of her roots, and her heritage was a source of strength and inspiration for her. She adopted the Tribal name “Dancing Beads” because, in her own words, she described how she loved to dance and use her talents to make bracelets out of all kinds of different beads. Her creations were not just beautiful and unique pieces, but reflections of her soul, created with creativity and love. She generously shared her talents, leaving behind pieces of art that would serve as cherished mementos for her loved ones.
Lilia spent over two decades nurturing plants and flowers in a plant nursery turning them into flourishing wonders. In addition to her green thumb, Lilia had a passion for the simple joys of life. Gathering around the card table with her family brought happiness to her heart. She cherished those moments of laughter and camaraderie as she played cards with her loved ones. Her family reunions were filled with the aroma of sizzling BBQ and the sound of her children's and grandchildren’s laughter, creating lasting memories that will forever be treasured. Lilia not only considered herself lucky to have such a wonderful family, but she tested her luck often as she enjoyed visiting the local casinos, usually coming out ahead after playing the slots for several hours at a time.
Lilia’s most enduring quality was her boundless kindness and generosity. Her home was always open to the neighborhood kids or those in need, a place where love flowed freely, and no one was ever turned away. She placed the well-being of others above her own and touched countless lives with her selflessness.
Lilia is survived by her children, Lisa Lara of South Bend, Indiana, Agustin Martinez of Irving, Texas, Jose Antonio (Debbie) Martinez of Elkhart, Indiana, Jose Fransisco Martinez of South Bend, Indiana, and Michael Hallett Jr. of Saginaw, Michigan; grandchildren, Lilia, Juan, Ruben, Marie, Jose Jr., Juan, Alicia, Jose Jr., Jalean, Kaden, Penelope, Ashlyn, and Juan; several great-grandchildren; her siblings, Diana Rodriguez, Mary Ann Vasquez, and Agnes L.
