Mamie Doster King, affectionately known as ?MaDear?, was born on March 6, 1926 in Ozark,
Alabama, to the late Emory and Nettie Smith. She was the eight child born to this union.
MaDear accepted Christ at an early age and rededicated her life to Christ in her later years. She relocated to Michigan in the 60?s. After relocating, she became a faithful member of Candle Light Baptist Church and attended as often as she could. She enjoyed fellowshipping with her church family. MaDear was educated in the Ozark School System. After settling in Michigan, she went to cosmetology school and became a licensed cosmetologist. In addition to working as a
cosmetologist, MaDear was employed by Daily and Valassis Pickle Factories and the Durby Assisted Living Home. She especially liked working with the residents at Durby. In 1942, MaDear married Gurnie Doster, Sr., who preceded her in death. To this union, five children were born: Annie Ruth, Gloria Marie, Sherlene, Gurnie and Rosa. She loved her
children. MaDear enjoyed helping and being around people. She often visited the Eastside Soup Kitchen
where she enjoyed the food and fellowship. Even though she didn?t always have her own transportation, she found a way to get to where she was needed. While serving others, she never looked for anything in return. However, one day, unexpectedly, she was given a Buick by Mr. Buster Wright. He told her, ?You help people all the time and you don?t have a car. I want to give you one, you need it.? He did just that!
MaDear loved being well dressed and looking sharp. She lived each day like it was Sunday. Even if she was just staying home and not going anywhere, she wanted to be dressed up. At church she would always be ?sugar sharp? wearing a beautiful dress and matching hat. She loved wearing her hats. MaDear loved flowers, stuffed Teddy Bears and especially her dogs. She loved to laugh, she enjoyed her family and friends, and many often heard, ?You know you owe me, where?s my money??
While being cared for at Luther Manor, MaDear was crowned the 2014 Valentine?s Day Queen. She received a beautiful crown, robe and corsage which she wore proudly. MaDear was blessed to live to see six generations.
MaDear leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, three children, Gurnie (Cynthia) Doster of Houston, Texas, Sherlene (Donald) Washington of Saginaw, Michigan and Rosa (Scipio) Williams of Flushing, Michigan; 25 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; 28 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Cleveland Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family members, close friends, Annie May Davis, Mattie Lee (Frank) Moore and Abraham (Ellen) Dexter and special neighbors Henry and Cynthia Landfair. In addition to her parents and husband Gurnie Doster, MaDear was predeceased by two daughters, Annie Ruth Doster Archer and Gloria Marie Doster; three sisters, Mary Lillie Baker, Annie Lipton and Florine (Calvin) Bryant; one uncle, Rufus (Fannie) Bryant; one grandson, Michael Doster; one great grandson, Travon Doster; one great-great grandson, DeVante Archer, Jr; one niece, Nettie (Buddy) Clardy; two son-in-laws, Henton Jackson, Sr. and George ?Bobby?
