A loving, devoted, mother, grandmother, and aunt, Mrs. Marjorie Ann Young-Sanders passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Age 86 years. She was born on July 3, 1936, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Jasper and Adelaide Baker.
Marjorie’s parents moved from Nashville, Tennessee, to Saginaw, Michigan when she was 6 years old. Marjorie was educated in Saginaw Public Schools. She was a graduate of the St. Joseph Adult Education program and later earned an Associate degree from Delta College. Before moving to Southfield, Michigan, Marjorie was a long-time member of Coleman Temple, under the leadership of the late Pastor Hurley Coleman Sr.
She became an active parent at all the schools her children attended. Nothing and nobody was more important than her children and grandchildren. Marjorie was hired by Mr. Charles McNair, Potter Elementary School Principal, as a lunch aide and she continued in this position under Principal, Larry Wells. She became a Teacher’s Aide for Hillier/Holland Educational Center and ultimately retired from Saginaw Public Schools after 30 years of dedicated and outstanding service. Marjorie had many roles while working in public schools. She was a coach for the Pom-pom Team at Potter Elementary and Arthur Eddy Middle School. She was President of Parents on Patrol for Saginaw High School, where she was named Mrs. Basketball. Marjorie loved ALL SPORTS, with a special love for Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan, in that order. She touched many lives during her tenure in the school system. Marjorie was the life of the party at tailgate events and traveled all over the state to support the Saginaw High School basketball and football team. Her sports-traveling friends were her special brother-in-law, James Henry Young, and her best friend, Darleen Carpenter, both of Saginaw Michigan.
Some of Marjorie's favorite pastimes were entering and winning all chili contests. She was an adamant bingo player and winner. She also played left-right center games and participated in all activities at her senior center. Marjorie was the previous owner of Marjorie’s' Crafts in downtown Saginaw which had its grand opening in 1997. She was a crafting extraordinaire: quilting, and making Easter and Christmas baskets, and dolls for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also collected antiques. After moving to Southfield, Michigan, in 2014, Marjorie met wonderful friends: Georgia, Jeanette, Diane, Kathy, Ms. Rose, Betty, Virginia, Bertha, Ms. Queenie, Margie King, Carol, and Mrs. Peacock.
Marjorie was a leader in the community for the Saginaw Housing Commission “projects” for over 40 years and implemented programs for children as a resident and thereafter. She loved working with and helping all children. Marjorie remained an active member of the First Ward Community Center Senior Group, where she continued her community service for people of all ages. One of the most remembered lives that she touched was that of Derrick Poe who was her student and a resident of “the projects.” After his mom’s death, Marjorie took him under her wings until he could relocate closer to his family in Denver. He is now a successful Computer Programmer.
