Massie Shannon (Lansing)

May 25, 1927 — November 28, 2019

Mrs. Massie Lee (Houston) Shannon started crying out because her soul had become tired and she needed a little rest. She called on the Lord until He heard her cry and came to see about her. She left to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at Holt Senior Care in Holt, Michigan. Her final words were “Lord, have mercy” and He did. Age 92 years. She was born May 25, 1927 in Marengo County, Alabama to the late Henry Houston, Sr. and Affie (Barley) Houston.

Massie was the youngest and only girl of the Houston clan. But in her words, she would say, “I did everything my brothers did”. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Gallion, Alabama. In her early 20s, she struck out on a mission and moved to Birmingham, Alabama and worked as a dietary aid at University Hospital by day and as a domestic worker by night. She did that for many years and decided to move north for a better life and settled in a place called East St. Louis, Illinois. Massie became employed by the Holiday Inn as a Domestic Engineer and retired after 40 plus years of service. She was a very outgoing person and enjoyed many things in life. Her many passions included traveling, cruising and socializing to name a few. But most of all she loved the Lord and worked diligently in many offices in the church. She was a member of the Greater New Hope Baptist Church for over 40 years. There she was in the choir, on the user board, Mothers Board, missionary board, and pastor’s aid committee.

In 2007, Massie made her last and final move to Lansing, Michigan to spend time with her last brother, Richard after his health failed him. Upon arriving she join the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member under the leaderships of Founder and Pastor Climmie Hughes, Pastor Willie Mills aka “Big Sugar” to her and Pastor Kevin S. Brown. She was president of the missionary board and also a church mother. In 2018, her health began to decline but her faith became stronger. She would always say, “I know the Lord loves me and if He never does anything else, He’s already done enough”.

She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Richard Robinson; grandsons, Roderick (Paulina), Kenyze and Richard; great grandchildren, Rashae, Neysa and Lindsay; one special sister in-law and lifelong friend, Mother Eliza Walls Houston; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including special friends, Ruth Fox, Juanita Harper, Ms. McCloud, Mae Brown, Mary Alexander, Mother Rachel Thompson, Pastor and First Lady Mills, the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church family and the Twin Oaks Meadows Family.

She was proceeded in death by her parents Henry and Affie Houston; brothers, Henry, Willie, Frank and Richard.
