Melvin Booker

July 30, 1929 — March 19, 2012

Melvin Booker Smitty made his transition Monday, March 19, 2012 from his residence. Age 82 years. He was born July 30, 1929 in Saginaw, Michigan to Louis and Janie Booker.
Melvin graduated from Saginaw High School. He married Lorene Lovett on June, 19, 1949 and from that union three children were born, Barry Logan, Joyce Elaine and Beth Ann. They also raised their great grandson, Anthony. Melvin was the first black man to own a Mom & Pop grocery store that was successful until the big chain food stores moved into Saginaw. He retired from the Post Office after 30 years of service. He was also and active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a man who loved life and passed it on to others.
His memory will be cherished by his three children; one goddaughter, Caren Elaine Hall; great grandson, Anthony; one brother, Louis Jr. (Pearl); two sisters, Gladys Winters, Jeannie Lowrey (Doris); many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends including a special cousin, Cynthia Clay Ruth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene; granddaughter, Cynthia; five brothers, Issac, Horace, Anderson, Woodrow and Arnold; one special brother-in-law, John Lawson Conner.
