Melvin Greene (Lansing)

November 17, 1954 — September 9, 2023

Melvin Scott Greene III, was born on November 17, 1954 to the Reverend Melvin Scott Greene Jr. and Susie Clark-Perks Greene. Melvin was the youngest of the three boys in the household and very loved from the start.

As a child, Melvin attended the Golden Star Baptist Church in Eunice, Louisiana where he accepted Jesus Christ into his life at a very early age. Melvin lived the rest of his childhood in Eunice before graduating from Ross High School and continuing on to Grambling State University majoring in Journalism. Although he didn’t finish, his love for writing and Grambling State football never waivered. After changing paths, Melvin traveled around the states spending time with his brother “Bee” and soon settled in Lansing, Michigan alongside his brother James. He resided in Lansing until he went home to be with the LORD.

As an adult, Melvin continued to serve and love God. He attended New Jerusalem Church under the leadership of the late Elder Charles and Fran Bicy for several years. He sang in the choir and made several life-long friendships and family bonds. He was currently a member of Lansing Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Samuel Duncan Jr. and Elect-Lady Dorothy Duncan. He was a former member of the choir and faithfully helped with the church food pantry of which he thoroughly enjoyed. Serving was his passion in ministry.

Over the years Melvin had many jobs, he met plenty of people and made many friends. However, his last job helping with children was by far the most rewarding. He loved all of the children and parents he encountered while being a crossing guard for the Lansing School District.

Melvin, affectionately known by his friends and family as “Mel” or “Dādie” was a good soul. He loved his family, sports, good music, good food and a good laugh. He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.

Melvin left this life on Saturday, September 9, 2023 to be with his LORD and Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Melvin (Ann) Scott Greene Jr. and Susie Clark-Perks Greene; grandparents; brothers, James Alexander Perks (Bessie Perks) and Clayborn “Bee” Perks; sister, Roslyn Hawkins; special niece, Sharral Monique Perks and special friend, Lester (“Cap”) Fulson.
