Mother Daisy Smith

Mother Daisy Smith passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at Avista Nursing and Rehab at the age of 86 years. She was born March 2, 1936, in Alberta, Alabama, to Jack Williams and Lula Mae (Russell) James.

Ms. Smith graduated from Boykin High School in Selma, Alabama, Class of 1956. She relocated to Saginaw, Michigan, in 1957, and united with Truevine Baptist Church. Mother Smith enjoyed sewing, making quilts, fishing, gardening, and attending church. She was self-employed as a domestic worker and cook throughout her life, working in private residences and rehab facilities. This work allowed her to be a stay-at-home mother for her children. She will be greatly missed.

Mother Smith leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Monica Smith, and Melinda Smith; two sons, Jessie Donald, and Garnell Smith Jr; grandchildren, Jessie Jr., Jason, and Daisy Donald, Tiarra (Jamie) Donald-McDaniel, Donald Richardson, Andrew Smith, Taneka VanBuren, Z’Leta VanBuren, and Ra’Moni Caldwell; a host of cousins including special cousins, Leola Beal “Bay,” and Annie Matthews Cox whom she considered like a sister; many other relatives and friends including best friends, Clinzo and Lessie O’Daniel and all neighbors in the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Dillon Street.

Mother Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Jack Williams, and Lula Mae (Russell) James, her stepdaughter, Felicia Smith-VanBuren; and good friends, Annie Mae Garth, Minnie Mae Turner, Lottie McDaniel, and Mamie Jones.
