Mother Ora Maxine Jackson went home to be with the Lord at the blessed age of 92 years on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 surrounded by her baby daughter Dolores and granddaughter Setetra Smith. She was born June 8, 1921 in Marvell, Arkansas to Eugene Johnson and Queen Esther Johnson-Vauters.
Maxine was united in Holy Matrimony with George Jackson on April 7, 1934. She married the love of her life and this union was blessed for 75 years. To this union eleven children were born. Maxine accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Robinson Memorial Church of God in Christ for over 60 years working on the Mothers Board and president of the Prayer and Bible Band. Maxine led songs during worship and worked on the kitchen committee cooking her special vegetable soup and many other good tasting soul food until she no longer was able. With her sweet spirit, abundance of love and soft spoken voice, Maxine had a way of melting your heart and she never wanted you to leave her house without filling your stomach with one of her delicious homemade recipes; which inspired a creation of a recipe book titled Mama Sho Can Cook by her loving son Jerome (J. J.) Jackson and was brought to life by her loving daughter Geneva Hawthorne.
She leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Ellihue (Alma), Robert (Shelley), Wilbert (Karen), James and Jerome Jackson; three daughters, Queen Esther (Ronald) Perteet, Geneva (Rick) Hawthorne and Dolores (Rick) Smith; thirty-two grandchildren; sixty-seven great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; one sister, Alma Jean Woods of East St. Louis, Illinois; several godchildren including Christine Hall, Shirley Thomas, J.D. Smith, Yolyn Hollingsworth, Vickie Walker, James and Liz McMurray, Jaye and Bertha Black; among her special children is sibling by choice Stevie Wonder; special nieces, Lorraine Robinson, Millicent Perkins, Linda Lewis, Helen Hawkins; nephews, Larry Boyd, Samuel Hardiman and Samuel Jackson, Jr.; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Jackson, sons, Curtis E. Jackson Shamsid-Deen, Milton Jackson, one daughter, Johnnie Mae Beasley, daughter-n-law Martha Jackson; grandchildren LaTrece Morris, Anthony Jackson, and Christian Smith; parents; brothers James and John Vauters; sisters Josephine Youngblood, Selia Mae Basdon and Earline Lewis.
