Ms. Naminah Oyah Koroma (Wurie), age 55 years, transitioned into the arms of God on Thursday, December 19, 2013 with her children by her side at McLaren Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. She was born January 29, 1958 in the District of Port Loko in Sierra Leone, West Africa to Sineh and Nanday Koroma.
Naminah came to the United States at the young age of 12. She attended school in Maryland before moving to Lansing, Michigan and where she attended Lansing Public Schools. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1977. She later attended Lansing Community College (LCC), Davenport College and graduated in 2000 from Olivet College with her Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon graduating High School in 1977, she gave her life to the Lord and joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She later married Abdul K. Wurie in 1979 and together in this union they had four beautiful children.
Ms. Naminah was a very beautiful, vibrant, outgoing, caring, independent, influential figure who was very active in the Lansing community and her church. She was employed with the Lansing School District for over 25 years. She truly enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and was very proud of her African culture and heritage. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, advisor, dancer and cook. She will truly be missed!
She leaves to cherish her memory the father of her children, Abdul K. Wurie; her four children, Sineh Wurie, Mariama Wurie, Hawanatu (Kiki) Wurie and Adama Wurie; four grandchildren, Mohamed Wurie, Jamaiya Wurie-Nowling, Kamilah Wurie-Guy, and DerRick Whitfield; honorary parents, Nene Assie Koroma, Joseph Koroma, Doris Harris and Grady Walker; honorary siblings, Maleika Walker and Cheo Walker; honorary grandchild, Rebecca Mansaray; sister in-law, Adama B. Wurie; nephews, Abass (Kadi) Sesay, Abebulrahman Sesay, Alhaji Dumbuya, Sheku Dumbuya; niece, Mummy Dumbuya; cousins, Mary Sowa, Prince Koroma, Christina Koroma, Memuna Dumbuya, Ibrahim Koroma, Alphonso Koroma, Ahmed Kanu, Kady Koroma, Madinatu Koroma and Dr. Unpha Koroma; very close friends, Michale Vann, Dr. Daphne Williams, Dr. George Ntiri, Katherine Caulker, Janice Owens, Dr. E. Ajovi-Scott, Lillian Flannery, Dean and Louise Fitches, Joan Ward; many other relatives and friends.
Naminah was preceded in her homegoing by both maternal and paternal grandparents and parents, Pa Sineh and Nanday Koroma, all her siblings, Oyah Koroma-Sesay, Lucy Koroma & Gbassay Koroma; honorary father, Dr. Alimamy Koroma and a host of other family members.
