Newnice Childs

January 17, 1936 — January 1, 2024

Ms. Newnice Childs departed this life to go home and be with the Lord on Monday, January 1, 2024. She was 87 years young. Newnice Childs was born on January 17, 1936, to James and Malisse Childs, in a small town in Mississippi called Itta Bena.

Newnice said Itta Bena had one stop sign and one streetlight. She quit school to help her mother. Newnice accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Macedonia Church of God in Christ where her nephew, David Freeman, was Pastor. Newnice served on the Kitchen Committee and sang in the choir.

Newnice came to Saginaw, Michigan in the early ’70s and was a homemaker. She later worked in the Foster Grandparent Program. Ms. Childs loved children. She raised and cared for countless children and adults, and opened her door to nieces, nephews, and other people's children.

Newnice loved gardening, playing cards, bingo, doing crossword puzzles, fishing, and cooking. Her favorite restaurant was Chen’s. She also enjoyed listening to the Blues, preferably Johnnie Taylor. Newnice was a good, sweet, and caring person. She loved to cook and host family dinners. She was a friend till the end. She loved hard, said what she meant, and meant what she said. Newnice will truly be missed. I love you, Momma!

Newnice leaves to cherish her memory her son, Reverend Erskin (Catrice) Porter, Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren, Azariah and Aaliyah, Midland, Michigan, Kiara Stewart, Fort Worth, Texas, and Amanda Stewart, Arlington, Texas; four great-grandchildren; four nieces, Melissa (Benjamin) Henry, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Angel (Jerome) Coakley, Saginaw, Michigan, Arica Latimer, Washington, D.C., and Teckner Brown, Saginaw, Michigan; three nephews, Charles, James, and Joe Freeman; many other relatives and friends including special friends, Mother Baker, Georgia Miller, and Linda Freeman.

Newnice was preceded in death by her parents, James and Malissie Childs; grandson, Maurice Porter; sisters, Bernice Davis and Mary Latimer; brother, Robert Childs; nephews, David Freeman, Jerry Freeman, and Dion Latimer.
