Oakley Jerome Lyons (Lansing)

June 11, 1952 — December 27, 2018

Mr. Oakley Jerome Lyons passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Mother Teresa House in Lansing, Michigan. Age 66 years. He was born on June 11, 1952, in Philadelphia, Mississippi to Otha and Valera Lyons.

Oakley, or Jerome as he was most known by, moved to Jackson, Michigan at the age of 2 and was educated in Jackson Public Schools. In 1976 married Sandra (Betts) Lyons (1951-2018) and they made their home in Lansing, Michigan where they raised their two children; Erika and Philip.

Jerome worked for the City of Lansing from 1975 until his retirement in 2002. Jerome once made the front page of the Lansing State Journal for hanging the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard street sign in Lansing, Michigan, renaming the street for the famed civil rights leader.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Erika Lynn "nee Lyons" (Chris) Shuck and Philip Jerome Lyons; his grandchildren, Erianna, CJ, Philip, Jazziniyah, Harmony, Je’Kaiyah, Je’Kariah; his two brothers, Henry (Dorothy) Lyons of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Larry (Cindy) Lyons of Tecumseh, Michigan; 5 aunts; 1 uncle; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of special cousins and friends.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; Otha and Valera Lyons and his only sister, Mary V. (Lyons) Fowler.
