Mr. Oliver Wesley Townsend, also known as “Buck,” was born May 28, 1937, in Troy, Alabama, to Jeff Berry Townsend and Jessie Mae Owens-Townsend. He passed from this earthly life at his home on Saturday, August 6, 2022, after a lengthy illness. Age 85 years.
Oliver accepted Christ at an early age. He attended Goshen Public Schools. He loved watching western movies and all sports, and his greatest hobbies were fishing, gardening and cooking. In 1955, Oliver started dating the love of life, Nora Pearl Glenn, whom he married on July 14, 1966. From this union three children were born, Kindy Dewayne, Leonora Williette, and Roger Allen. In 1965, Oliver moved his family to Saginaw, Michigan. He was employed with General Motors (Chevrolet Grey Iron Foundry) until he retired after 40 years of service in November, 2004. Because of his dedicated service, General Motors honored Oliver by giving him 45 years of service. Oliver loved his nieces and nephews, but his greatest joy was loving and spoiling his grandchildren.
Oliver leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Nora Pearl; two sons, Willie (Darlene) Penn, Quincy, Florida, and Kindy Townsend, Jefferson, Indiana; two daughters, Ruby (Jimmy) Elder-Lewis, Troy, Alabama, his caregiver, Leonora (Bruce) Townsend-Pickett, Grand Rapids, Michigan; one brother, Willie (Grace) Townsend, Troy, Alabama; one sister-in-law, Johnnie Ruth McClure, Montgomery, Alabama; his grandchildren, DeOndre Pruitt, Nekeytrarn Penn, Rubkeysia Elder, Rubshondia Elder, Shanteisha Pruitt, Taquitta (Jerrell) Porter, Quavian Lewis, Kindy (Brittany) Townsend Jr., Markis Townsend, Glory Kidd, Sarah Gillespie, Bryana Pickett, Jacory Townsend, Chassie (Reginal) Rogers; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two very close friends, Robert “Bobby” Glover, and James McKinney; an abundance of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Oliver was preceded in death by one son, Roger Townsend; his parents, Jeff Berry Townsend and Jessie Mae Owens-Townsend; three brothers, Odies, L. Cannie, and Johnny Townsend; nine sisters, Lillie R. Davenport, Hattie M. Jackson, Jessie L. Jackson, Willie M. Brundidge, Emma K. Gaiter, Annie G. Burns, Dorothy Copeland, Vera Fuller, Margret Foreman; one great-great-grandchild, Asa Turner.
