Mr. Roger L. Howard transitioned into his Heavenly home on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the age of 68 years. He was born January 3, 1947 in Surrency, Georgia to Reverend Nathaniel and Catherine Howard.
Roger was the first born in a family of ten, eight boys and two girls. Harris Temple COGIC, Williams Temple COGIC and Coleman Temple COGIC were where Roger grew to know God, being raised in a home of a preacher. Yes, Roger was a PK kid! He was a 1965 graduate of Buena Vista High School. He was employed for a number of years with General Motors Corporation. Roger was also "schooled" in the state penal system, graduating in Tooling and Machinery. After employment in area machine shops, Roger made his mark by starting his own remodeling/handyman business. His craftsmanship was displayed at Evans Funeral Home, Elks Lounge, Pips Real Estate and many other residential properties.
Roger loved his family and friends. As he had many family members, Roger had many friends. Chiefest among them being his brother, Melvin, who could write a book on Roger. His friend, Don Oglesby could write maybe two books on him. Others, Simmel Hall, Lorenzo and Jesse Banda all could have equal amounts to say about Roger. Roger and five siblings lost their mother, Catherine, when they were very young. Their father, Reverend Howard remarried to Wealthy E. Shields. She raised and loved them from the very beginning and they grew to love her as well. Roger loved shooting pool and was very good at it. He would beat everyone except his brother, Mark. He beat Melvin and Don ALL THE TIME! (wink-wink) His wonderful presence will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves to celebrate his legacy six brothers, Melvin (Eloise) Howard, John Howard, David (Diane) Howard, Mark Howard, Kenneth and Stanley Howard; his stepmother, Wealthy E. Howard; a special aunt and uncle, Marilyn Jean Cheatham and Cornell Howard; a host of nieces, nephews and many, many close cousins in the area and the state of Georgia; three special friends beyond measure, Don Oglesby, Ms. Tonya Gary, Archie, Barbara Payne, Candice and Damion Payne.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Nathaniel and Catherine Howard, two sisters, Jeanette Howard and Elizabeth Davis and one brother, Nathaniel Howard Nate.
The family would like to express special thanks to Covenant Healthcare, Ivan E. Phillips and the staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel and the Elks Lounge.
